I'm trying to replicate this
wallbox_set_number.PNG
into a MQTT entity where I could set a number with a min and max value.
I can't find a standard capability that fits or any documentation on local MQTT capabilities and the only post on the forum mentioning local MQTT capabilities is this post, is it even possible in current release?
My trial and error work in local_mqtt_capabilities.yaml isn't much to show as it's just a copy of mqtt_capabilities.yaml with changed names and then I got stuck.
Any guidance, examples, documentation, future feature request or denial would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hi,
For the standard capabilities MSR sends both a value record and a units record to InfluxDB. The latter I would like not to send as they are not really any use for me and it will reduce the number of records send to my InfluxDB.
Is there a quick way to do this with a filter_entities line like: *>units?
Or do I have to update all capabilities to read like this:
power_sensor:
attributes:
value: true
Cheers Rene
Build 21228 has been released. Docker images available from DockerHub as usual, and bare-metal packages here.
Home Assistant up to version 2021.8.6 supported; the online version of the manual will now state the current supported versions; Fix an error in OWMWeatherController that could cause it to stop updating; Unify the approach to entity filtering on all hub interface classes (controllers); this works for device entities only; it may be extended to other entities later; Improve error detail in messages for EzloController during auth phase; Add isRuleSet() and isRuleEnabled() functions to expressions extensions; Implement set action for lock and passage capabilities (makes them more easily scriptable in some cases); Fix a place in the UI where 24-hour time was not being displayed.Hi guys,
I've recently bought a new Govee outdoor permanent lights set, and I love it. WAF is pretty high, and the product is good quality. I hope to never run lights in the front of the house.
This new addition has found me searching for something to control these lights, locally. Govee has officials remote and LAN APIs and Home Assistant has it supported, but some undocumented stuff that's integrated into an Homebridge plugin that seems very promising. Without this plugin, my playlist is orchestrated via the cloud and that makes zero sense.
In the past I got some inspiration from plugins running on other platforms and Homebridge seems one of the most active. I could map its devices via HomeKit-local on HA, but I've decommissioned Homebridge years ago when we settled to Alexa (and I want to stay simple), so I had an idea: why get inspiration and rewrite things, when you could write an Homebridge adapter that could load any Homebridge plugin and run them natively under Reactor (MSR)?
I'm not sure if that's viable or made any sense, so I'm posting here to get feedback, encouragement and your thoughts. Anyone could be potentially interested in such a thing?
This system has been running flawlessly year after year for the time changes twice a year literally since MSR came out so I was caught off-guard when this happened this morning.
Time in MSR browser is EST, time on RPi is local time (DST).

I've rebooted the RPi I've restarted MSR after double-checking the time on the RPi. Used a completely different browser to eliminate any caching concerns. Double-checked MSR reactor.yamla5f23151-d691-4343-8499-8e77a55528e5-image.png
What am I missing here @toggledbits ?
Hi- looking for a hint in where to start. My goal is to set a PIN code in a zwave kwikset lock triggered in a rule.
The device isn’t exposing methods to help. The x-hass.call-service looks promising, but what would the service name be?
Plan b would be send the zwave controller a config command- I don’t see any way to explicitly send a command through JS Zwave in my environment.
Running reactor bare metal. JS Zwave is running as an add on inside HASS OS.
Any tips are appreciated.
Hey crew, I'm trying to use MSR to control the RGB values of a Z-Wave bulb in Home Assistant.
Problem I'm running into - I would like to use 'rgb_color.set' to control this, but it doesn't work, instead it always passes the values '255,255,255' to HA no matter what values I enter within MSR.
More notes and examples below - I'm wondering if this is a formatting issue that I'm missing? Thanks for any help!
NOTES FROM TROUBLESHOOTING:
'rgb_color.set_rgb' works successfully, which seems strange. You'd think they would both be affected I've tried a couple different formats, like adding quotes, adding/removing spaces between the RGB values, nothing has fixed it.EXAMPLES:
When I use 'rgb_color.set_rgb', the values successfully carry over to Home Assistant:

But when I use 'rgb_color.set', the values DO NOT successfully carry over to Home Assistant:

Core 2024.2.5 Supervisor 2024.02.1 Operating System 12.0Hi,
I’m running MSR in a docker container on my Synology Nas. The container is automatically updated using watchtower weekly.
It was working. Now, after the update, Reactor webpage is able to load, and all indications on the webpage suggests that it is working fine. However, the updated statuses from Home Assistant and Vera are not being detected.
The container logs show the following error

Noticed right away last night at closing time that the open/close had become inverted with the update to v23326.
It wasn't an awful bit of lift to change all Reactions to reflect the change but it was jarring initially when everything flipped.
Are there release notes on that version, @toggledbits ?
Installing latest-24052-d039d560 and I did a dumb thing: moving too quickly, I deleted package.json instead of package-lock.json because the latter didn't exist.
Ran the installer script - but in the wrong directory so I moved package.json manually.
Everything has come back EXCEPT for my MQTT Cloud OwnTracks entities. They're erroring because of this:

reactor.yaml is fine, all MQTT configs exactly as they should be.

The file it says is "unreadable" is present and hasn't changed (today's date is the Changed date because I did a quick nonsense edit to see that it was not corrupted in some way).

I was using this method here by @therealdb to run Lua Code from MSR on my Vera Plus but it seems to have stopped working now.
Its the one where you uploaded a file called VeraScenes.lua to your Vera hub and then you could call functions of that file to run particular bits of Lua code from an MSR reaction etc.

This was working well for a long time but I noticed today its not working now.

Hello all, I am trying to create a timer in home assistant that will run for the amount of seconds left in the day. To do so, my plan is to create an expression in MSR where I subtract the seconds elapsed in the day from 86400. From there I will run a service command to start the timer for the seconds I calculated in the expression. I have tried using the time () function in MSR but cannot figure out a way to just get the time elapsed today and in seconds.
I really like these new widgets in MSR status page! Still, at least for the history-widgets, a filtering capability would be helpful. I have quite a many rules running with short intervals and they are clogging these lists making it harder to see "more interesting" ones...
Can file a request in Mantis, if there's wider support for the idea?
Hey Patrick, was wondering you could add the option to be able to disable each individual action. Often when I am testing new actions for my rules I have to copy the rule and then edit it, then once I am happy I have to copy the new actions back to the original rule. It also would be useful for situations when I need to disable certain actions for whatever reason, ie a device not working correctly. I know I can copy complete rules over and make whatever edits and then disable the old rule but it sometimes makes for a lot of different version of a rule that I am testing.
Good morning,
I'm running Home Assistant with MSR, and I do my automation strictly within MSR. I have some basic notifications set up, for instance, when my dishwasher has completed it's cycle, it'll send my iPhone a push notification via the x_haas.system.call_service --> notify.mobile_iphone action.
I saw in the Home Assistant documentation that you can push Actionable Notifications. The example they use if there is motion detection, but no one is home, you can sound an alarm or silence an alarm.
Can this be done from MSR and not directly in Home Assistant? I'd like to do something more of an acknowledgement, like if a door or window is left open, to have a way to get notified, but acknowledge that it is open, and not send any more notifications. If not acknowledged, the notification will continue every 5 or 10 minutes until the door or window is closed, or the notification is acknowledged. This would be useful in situations where I may have a slider door open for some fresh air, so it was deliberate, versus an entry door that didn't latch when entering or leaving the house.
Hi (fourth draft to simplify as I solve problems...)
My MSR is installed from the HASS add on store.
The Docker container did not have SSH client installed.
I was able to get SSH installed and setup keys on a remote worker server for password free SSH logins.
I now have a shell command that sends commands to the remote worker server. It renders content to a tidbyt LED matrix display.
Does anyone know if this will survive an update of the Reactor addon? Will the updated docker image wipe SSH and the private keys stored in the Reactor Docker Container?
Also - is it better to just move Reactor over to the worker server and manage my own updates?
I am using HAOS - Core-2024.1.2, Supervisor 2023.12.0, OS 11.3
I just installed the Reactor plugin for home assistant and tried to move my configuration by copying the reactor-data files to the same location in the home assistant files. Unfortunately this does not work.
I tried rebooting, restarting but the reactor in home assistant stays clean. I tried adding some rules, they do stick but I soo no difference in the reactor-files.
I guess I am missing something very obvious???
No idea what however.... So I would appreciate some pointers.
Warm regards
Hans
Running MSR latest-23344-ca53d088 within a Docker.
My Hubitat (HE) hub suffered almost a 4 day outage from a corrupt backup that failed to restore. During this time I had my MSR docker stopped. Well, I didn't stop it until the the hub had been down for 24 hours. Anyway, I finally got the hub back online this morning and am fixing my MSR rules for everything that was lost. Support needed to purge out the Apps section of the backup.
So my issue. So far everything I have fixed is working as expected, with the exception of my motion controllers. I can see them go "Active" within my HE, but the Entity within MSR never changes from false to true. I ran through a slew of rooms that have motion sensors and only 1 out of 6 changed to true.
I removed the sensor I'm testing with from Maker API, restarted MSR, re-added it, restarted MSR, but no difference. I then Deleted it from MSR and restarted MSR. It was re-added, but again no change. How can I go about testing this further to find out why/what is going on?
Invocable rules via MQTT
-
Hey @toggledbits.
From the docs:You cannot control the state of rules via MQTT. Rule state is driven exclusively by the result of its conditions.
And I'm OK when rules are triggered by something else, but I've built a couple of rules to be used by other rules, to streamline the logic, and it'll be useful to invoke a rule via MQTT. It's probably close to what rule/:id/restart is doing in the HTTP api.
Thanks!
-
There are other ways to accomplish this. Virtual switches are the traditional way, of course. You just add conditions to your rules to check the switch states, and that gives you additional external input you can use to control the rule state. The method I now prefer is to use a global variable, if for example, I don't need or want a UI for it. For example, I use virtual switches for "party mode" and "guest mode" in my house, which changes the behavior of my lighting rules, so my wife can turn these on and off from the dashboard or Alexa. But I use a global variable for "vacation mode", for which I want no Alexa visibility at all, and it's typically part of a bigger procedure to ready the house for long unoccupied times.
I've heard this "it would be useful" before, but nobody has yet explained why or how, so as of this moment, I'm open to hear it, but I'm unconvinced. I also think there' may be a framing problem. Rules are not "invoked." They are state, not action. Reactions can be invoked, either explicitly or driven by rule state. The Rule is the driver, not the driven thing; the Reaction is the driven element.

@toggledbits yes, you’re right and I’ve used all you mentioned, but I’m not really satisfied.
But know I’ve started building a couple of new rule sets starting from previous code on luup, where I basically have to invoke a given set of actions (mainly setting roller shutters at a given positionm) based on other inputs (Alexa, a bot, another rule set). I’ve done it with global reactions, but since they’re not organizable it’s soon becoming too difficult to remember where it’s stored the logic and what is calling what.
You’re right that it’s not what I really need. I’d prefer a way to watch for a given mqtt message instead. This will probably solve all my problems, since it will be easier to organize and I’ll archive the same result.
In this particular case, I’d like to invoke it via Alexa and I’ll maybe just define a global variable and start messing with the corresponding api. Thanks!

You know you can do that to an entity, right? And then conditions check the entity?
-
@toggledbits yes, I’ll try to define a virtual entity that will just try to catch messages in a given topic and react to the payload. I don’t want to map every single actions to entities, because this is a lot of work for something that’s meant to be not exposed into ui.

@therealdb said in Invocable rules via MQTT:
catch messages in a given topic and react to the payload
This is where what you've asked so far is an incomplete thought, in my view. I can probably easily create a condition that responds to events from controllers such as an MQTT message, but those messages have payloads, and you haven't really mentioned that part before this post, although I anticipated that was where it was going to go. So as you have now said, you don't just need to respond to a message. You need to respond to a message, parse the payload it may or may not include, which may be a simple value or a more complex object in JSON form that you want to navigate, from which you may want to make a decision based on a single value taken from the payload or multiple values, which may possible need to be transformed or scaled prior to further processing (expressions), and then use any of the existing operations (and maybe some not yet conceived, so more expressions) to complete the conditional test, and/or store those values in local or global variables for additional uses elsewhere. This is all supposed to happen inside the context of a single condition.
Functionally, this is what MQTTController's method of reducing topics/events to entities does today, it just does not do it within the definition of a single condition (or condition type) in a rule. To make it a condition would require an extremely elaborate UI — you have to be able to specify what topic you are interested in (and since they are not defined/standardized, the user has to know and supply it correctly to the letter), parse the payload (which is in a form that the user again must know and supply) and use that output to extract data from the payload (the type and location of which within the payload again must be supplied by the user accurately — expressions? maybe too complex, so add an object navigator?), then store and/or build conditions from any number of those payload values (where currently conditions are one-value-one-test). MQTTController does all this now, but if you want it in a UI for a condition type, what you really are asking, in my view, is that I build Node-RED as a condition type, because this is also exactly how NR operates; this basically describes what NR fundamentally is and does.
I agree that configuring the custom entities for MQTTController is not for the timid, and I'd like it to be easier, but that's due in large part of what MQTT is, and what it is not. MQTT is, as you point out, not meant for UIs. It is fundamentally a transport interface, and nothing more. It doesn't define what the topics or payloads are, and it invites manufacturer/implementor interpretation/imagination/entropy in its use, and thus eschewing standardization/consistency/predictability, all of which defies the idea of creating a simple one-size-fits-all UI, and shifting a lot of the knowledge requirement onto the user. Even though NR has (is) a GUI, the user has to supply all of the knowledge about the topic and payload, and that is different for every topic/device/vendor. This is exactly why NR gets as complex as it gets, and why the learning curve is so steep and a lot of people can't use it all.
-
I have to define something to parse the payload because I really don’t want to define too many rule set just to intercept messages. But it’s not too different than parsing a json after an http call, or transform entities values in expressions.
The choice is up to you, but this is not uncommon for power users to use mqtt to send/receive values from different systems and I’m not that interested in having a bus message representing an entity, so an an UI artifact.
As I didn’t wanted to invest too much time, I’ve accomplished the same by sending a numeric value to an an expression and I’m using it as a trigger. I already have a system that’s it’s able to intercept specific mqtt messages with a simple configuration and I’ll continue to use it. Thanks anyway for the pointers.
-
For anyone trying to do the same in future, here's what I did, in detail:
- I defined a global variable named scenefrommqtt (leave it empty, so it's settable)
- I'm publishing an MQTT message under reactor/mqtt/Expr/scenefrommqtt/set, with value "mykey" (the quotes are important)
- On Reactor's side, I'm using the variable as a trigger, using the same name defined for the Rule Set
It's working very well for me, and it's easy to setup. Thanks @toggledbits for both MSR and for pushing me to think of current features, instead of asking for new complicated ones
Now I have just one single vera code running, and I'll migrate it later, leaving the Vera just as a glorified ZWave bridge until it'll work.
