Ah, this is the good old “Wasp in the Box” problem.
Anything you can do to “ring fence” the room, such that entry/exit activity is caught, could achieve this without requiring a sensor to be able to detect a stationary person.
There was lots of discussions of this on the original MCV forum (and copied to the newer one, so can be accessed there.) Just search for “Wasp in the Box”.

Slightly sad that the Zigbee folks seem to have an out of the box for this, cheap and readily available mm wave detectors.
I don't really want to get a Zigbee dongle and / or some Zigbee 2 mqtt server, just seems more complex. I may go down the route of trying some commercial mm wave sensors and tying their output to a Fibaro binary sensor.C

Here’s a wifi mm wave sensor that people have been raving about. Not sure if it’ll work with anything else other than Home Assistant though
-
You could build your own. https://community.home-assistant.io/t/mmwave-presence-detection-esphome-style/382778

This one, while geared to HA, uses MQTT over wifi.

This sensor has a very good concept, not only movement but also human presence.
Many people have had great results, but I bought 3, and I'm having a problem, as not installed right on top, of the roof of the house, he loses much sensitivity, and I'm getting soment 2m.
Today I finished a drawing to print in 3D cover to change and expose the sensor because other people have reported a similar problem, and took the cover, and worked fine.

Which sensor is that?

@catmanv2 Yeah, it quit working for me as well. Could view it in the wayback machine though.

Thanks
Been looking around and I'm pretty convinced that mm wave sensors can be integrated simpler than that (although perhaps not as neat)
I'm planning on checking out something like this:
Which appears to have switched outputs, and connect it to either a Fibaro implant / binary sensor or even cheaper a Shelly.
Another option may be something like this:
Which I hope will have it's own web interface....

Aqara FP1
Needs HA again though. I'd rather like to avoid another system, personally.

interesting idea....

Aquara FP2 seems a game changer. I’ll probably try a couple of them later this summer, when I hope I’ll have more free time for our true mission
the fact that I could detect people standing, walking or sitting is a game changer for my use cases (large open space and master bedroom).
