Dumb question about bulbs
-
So my house only has 2 wire lighting and due to the way it's been installed, plus our flooring options, conversion to 3 wire is not practicable in any case that I want (hope I got those the right way around!)
So it's only dimmer units for me (boo hiss!) even though I'm only ever using them as on and off.So what's going to happen if I put a non-dimmable LED bulb on a dimmer? is the dimmer going to get upset or will the bulb just come on at 100%? I'm never going to ask the bulb to actually dim, I only want on or off.
Thoughts?
Cheers

Use a Shelly 1L, neutral optional, ON/OFF.
FWIW, you can use the ON/OFF buttons that are on the Dimmer GUI. -
To answer your question the a non dimmable lamp will be fine if at full brightness, and as you dim it it will start to flicker. This should not damage the dimmer,
With UK wiring system you can install dimming inserts or standard relay inserts at the light fitting, as you will find Live, Neutral and switched live at the fitting.

Sadly not in my house, you won't
Not that I've checked every switch....

What bulbs do you have that are driving the requirement ?
Having the 2 wire set up myself - (using fibaro dimmers) I have a mix of bulb types, from the old fashion filament ones, up to the newer LEDs -
To avoid any issues, I would try to get dimmable bulbs - who knows you might start to like a bit of mood lighting.
Over time I’ve actually moved most of my lights over to Hue, and also put the hue switch over the existing switch (that way they can’t be turned off)
I did this as I liked that I can have more things access/control my lights. -

I've just moved my office and due to previous construction idiocy the light switch is outside, so I want to integrate Openluup / Alexa control. There's a greater range of non-dimmable bulbs. And they are cheaper

Not quite sure how to interpret that

I was hoping someone would pick up on the (overly geeky) reference

There has to be L swL and N. at either the switch or the light, unless there is a joint box under the floor(which by regs should be accessible unless crimped or approved joints).Yes. Under the floor (upstairs) and not accessible
No reason to believe it's not within regs either as there were some questions when we bought it 10 years back.
<edit> Oh, umm. At the light. I wonder....
<edit2> Just checked. Yep, there it is. Not at all sure I can get a module in there though

If space is an issue you can also fit the module at the light fitting. It's a common method when there isn't a Neutral at the switch and a Neutral optional relay isn't on hand.
I won't comment any further on wiring rules as I'm quoting AUS/NZ not UK which will be different and may confuse.
I'll moov to the next topic now...... -
@black-cat No that's helpful thanks.
I shall grab one. I need a new light fitting anyway so probably some kind of connector
Thanks
