Gradually turn on lights.
Tom_DT
I have several lights that I would like to turn on very gradually over 15 or 20 seconds. from 0 to .25 in .01 increments. I have tried a few things that came nowhere near working, so here I am.

Stop the MSR by an external switch on Hubitat.
wmarcolinW
Use case: When performing home maintenance, such as air conditioning, I want all rules involving air conditioning to be disabled. To do this, to day, I have a virtual switch that I placed within all rules involving air conditioning, meaning that if I turn it off, none of them work. Then another situation: the water pump system and garden irrigation, another switch. In short, I had to create several virtual switches in Hubitat to disable rules in MSR. Unfortunately, however, I was unable to cover all scenarios, so I wondered if it would be possible for MSR to support a virtual MSR switch, which, when configured in the reactor settings, would function as a general on/off switch for MSR. If it is configured and turned off, the entire rules and actions in MSR stops working, except for the status change reading process, specifically for this switch, which, when turned on, would restart the MSR. Would it be possible to do something like this? Any recommendations from the experts?

Way to search for rules (rule state) in other rules
T
@toggledbits, not sure if this is a feature request or I'm using the search tool wrong. You have a "Search for rule" in the Rules Set tab in MSR. It works nicely to find a rule and bring up said rule, but can it/could it be used for as a "where used?" global search? For instance, I have a fairly large set of rules, divided up into 10 different rulesets. There's easily a hundred individual rules, and many of the rules have Rule State triggers, which of course refer to other rules. Amongst my troubleshooting today, I came across what may have been a duplicate or troubleshooting attempt, but I can't tell if it's actually used as a Rule State in another rule without opening each rule that I suspect it may be a part of. Thanks.

🎉 My very first MSR controller: OpenSprinkler
therealdbT
Since today is my birthday - and I still pretend to be unconventional - I'm giving away a present to this wonderful community and I'm releasing my first OpenSprinkler controller for MSR. It was real fun to code it - and while it's still WIP, it seems to work OK for me. It's polling-based at the moment, but I'll add support for updates via MQTT very soon (it's already partially coded). Get it at (install is similar to MQTTController and such): https://github.com/dbochicchio/reactor-opensprinkler Feel free to try it. It's beta software, but it's stable. I'll update it weekly until all the tasks from my todo list are empty. Since I've learnt a lot from this controller, I'll explore new controllers soon.

Advice reqeusted to migrate MSR from Bare Metal to Container
T
Good day all, I'm in the process of trying to shut down my 10 year old Linux home server that served many purposes, but primarily it's what I used for my NAS/Plex Media server. I migrated the NAS aspect of the server in November of last year to a true NAS solution (Ubiquti UNAS Pro), which is rack mount and much more efficient than my old tower, which it's only side benefit was heating my home office during the winter. Unfortunately it also means heating my home office during the summer, which were about to be in full swing. I have two things running on this 10 year old server at this point. MSR and pi-hole. I'm running Plex Media Server on Fedora Workstation in Podman on mini PC, which is much more energy efficient than my old tower. My next step is to migrate MSR. I know there are images of MSR out there, and creating it is well documented. I'm going to be using Podman instead of Docker for various reasons, but they work very similar. What I don't know, is what I need to do to migrate my existing Bare Metal installation over to a container. Has anyone done this? Any advice?

Reactor (Multi-System/Multi-Hub) Announcements
toggledbitsT
Build 21228 has been released. Docker images available from DockerHub as usual, and bare-metal packages here. Home Assistant up to version 2021.8.6 supported; the online version of the manual will now state the current supported versions; Fix an error in OWMWeatherController that could cause it to stop updating; Unify the approach to entity filtering on all hub interface classes (controllers); this works for device entities only; it may be extended to other entities later; Improve error detail in messages for EzloController during auth phase; Add isRuleSet() and isRuleEnabled() functions to expressions extensions; Implement set action for lock and passage capabilities (makes them more easily scriptable in some cases); Fix a place in the UI where 24-hour time was not being displayed.

Organizing/ structuring rule sets and rules
R
Hi guys, Just wondering how you guys organize your rule sets and rules. I wish I had an extra layer to have some more granularity, but my feature request was not popular. Maybe there are better ways to organize my rule sets. I use the rule sets now primarily for rooms. So a rule set per room. But maybe grouping by functionality works better. Any examples/ suggestions would be appreciated.

I have an array where it sorts through an device_trackers that are marked as away. I want to be able to have the array sort based on the most recent devices that were marked as away. Currently arrays are sorted alphabetically, is there any way to use the sort command to sort based on the recent most item added to the array?

For example I have device_trackers A, B and C. The order in which the devices were away: B, C, A. The array will have these sorted as A, B, C, but I want it to be sorted as B, C, A.

I am basically trying to get the name of the most recent device that is away and use that further in my triggers.

My overall goal for this rule is to notify the last person that left home if they left a garage open. I have to use HA conditions in my actions because I am using actionable notifications which aren't possible to configure in MSR.

Triggers are if any of the devices are not in the Pabla Home zone and any of the 4 garages are left open...

      c9abb36e-d80a-4bfc-bb70-a706549ee054-image.png

It will trigger text to be filled into input_text. The text that will be filled in is the expression of the latest device that was marked as not_home + some editing to make it a service to be used in HA. Then run an automation in HA. (none of this is an issue, all works as expected)

      bce2237c-1fe3-472f-b004-1093fe18bc91-image.png

I have an expression that identifies any devices that are not_home. Here is where my question comes from: from the array ('away_devices') I would like to select the LAST device that was not_home (not shown currently in the screenshot since I am not sure how to do so). In other words the device that was home last.

After that I convert the output to a string, replace/add some characters to output this service name notify.mobile_app_<insert device name>. From there that service is sent to HA to send a notification to the specific device that was last home.

In my expressions screenshot I have only one device shown as not_home so you can see the final output of replace.

      5f77dbc8-64f3-4c95-80be-4481dfdfa027-image.png

Hopefully this adds some clarity, I didn't want to originally explain the whole rule since its fairly complex and a little hard to explain.

@pabla If there's no deterministic order to the list you are building (and it certainly appears that there is not), then you have to use set arithmetic: when not_home changes, you compute the difference between its new value and a copy of its previous value that you've stored. This will give you a new set (array) with the new element(s), and these would be the last ones to leave the house.

Here's a simple test rule you can try that demonstrates this. It uses the arrayDifference() function for the array comparison:

      efbf4b20-5bb1-417e-a8a4-b2b4deb41be9-image.png

The last_not_home variable is used to keep a copy of the previous contents of the array, updated every time it changes, after the difference is computed. The difference is stored in new_not_home, so this is where you will find the new element(s) added to the array. You can try this by having your Expressions page open in one window, and this rule's detail open in another, and watch what happens when you change not_home (assumed to be global here).

maybe I'm missing something, but if the order is already OK, why are you sorting it? are you trying to get the last or fist ones added? look at https://reactor.toggledbits.com/docs/Expressions-%26-Variables/#arrayobject-handling-functions

pop/shift should be enough to get the first/last and remove it, or just myArr[0] and myArr[myArr.length] if you want to maintain the current array intact.

A review of the documentation for the sort() function will also tell you how to write a custom comparator.

To my understanding pop/shift will get the first/last item in the array but if its sorted alphabetically by default it won't get the last item added to the array.

Had a look at that sort() command and did some research but everything I come across only shows how to sort the array in a different way. I don't want to sort the array, I want it to act as a list sort of. As a new item is added it goes to the top of the array.

So I have tried shift since it returns the first element in the array, but the same issue still is happening. Since the array is sorted alphabetically the first element isn't always the latest item that was added to the array. Here's a better explanation:

Here is a the array of the devices that are not_home.
                602a4458-6bd6-41ad-9f47-824e0d7621f2-image.png

My goal is to notify the user that was considered not_home last. In this case the order of devices that were not_home was "Mom_iPhone", "Armans_iPhone" and then "Jas_iPhone". Since "Jas_iPhone" was the last device that was considered not_home I would like to target that device. But when I use the shift command "Armans_iPhone" is the output bc it is first in the array when sorted alphabetically. If I use the pop command the output is "Moms_iPhone", which is still not what I want.

OK. So which one IS? How do you know? If it's just the last one (really), that's pop(), not shift. That should be clear in the docs.

Sorry, no, the question is, what is the rule by which Reactor is expected to know which one was most recently added? That is, is the order by which the list/array is built in any way deterministic?

My overall goal for this rule is to notify the last person that left home if they left a garage open. I have to use HA conditions in my actions because I am using actionable notifications which aren't possible to configure in MSR.

Triggers are if any of the devices are not in the Pabla Home zone and any of the 4 garages are left open...

It will trigger text to be filled into input_text. The text that will be filled in is the expression of the latest device that was marked as not_home + some editing to make it a service to be used in HA. Then run an automation in HA. (none of this is an issue, all works as expected)

What a brilliant solution! I think that did the trick, the only modifications needed was to make the new_not_home and last_not_home variables global so I can use them in the original rule. Initial testing looks like this did the trick. Thanks again Patrick!
