I need a handful of victims volunteers to help test previews of the next build of Reactor. A long-standing request was for "a simple login mechanism," but in practice, adding user authentication and competent access control turned out to be a pretty big project with a lot of big changes on both server and client sides. It's a bit more than I'm comfortable testing myself and springing out to everyone at once, so I'd like to work with a small group to put it through "sea trials."
Major changes/features include:
User authentication with hashed password storage; User group configuration with application restriction (admin, dashboard, API); Detailed control over API access, with user- and token-based authentication/authorization; Improvements to the HTTPS service; Improvements to UI coordination with the core for Rules and Reactions. If this sounds like something you'd like to help with, drop me a reply here in this thread or privately.
I have a case where I'm trying to send a MQTT message similar to the example below:
Topic: pool/set { "command": 4, "value": 1, "time": 0, "interval": 0 }But I need to set "value" so that it is an integer between 20-30. I thought I could use "dimming" capability here, but there's probably a better way. @therealdb ?
(Using userauth-24120-7745fb8d build in Docker)
There's a filtering capability for entities in reactor.yaml, but I have a case where I don't want to filter an entity altogether, but would like to "throttle" it, as this sensor updates every 1-2 seconds (and therefore unnecessarily takes database space).
Sensor data comes through home assistant, and seems that there's no way to control update interval at that end.
So I'm asking if plugin configuration could support limiting/throttling updates for certain entities?
Good morning,
Hopefully this is a simple request. I believe the title should be self explanatory, but just in case, I'll elaborate.
On the status tab, we all get alerts if a device state has changed (i.e., been removed). This is great, but when I go into the entities tab, I have to either type the name (or a portion thereof) of the device that has been removed, or I need to scroll all the way through my list of devices. This is infrequent, however, yesterday I replaced a failed device in my HAAS environment. It was a Z-Wave switch that is added using the Smart Scan QR code, which normally makes it pretty easy. However, some devices don't get fully added the first time around, so it'll add multiple entries into HAAS until it get's the S2 authentication correct and the device fully included. It did this to me yesterday, and I had to delete the incomplete device from my installation. MSR still saw the entities of that failed/incomplete switch entity, and I was left with 8 alerts and entities that I needed to removed.
It's not a huge problem, but this example was just one switch. If I were to add replace multiple devices at once, this could be a bit more annoying to remove. It would be helpful to be able to filter by removed entities, so I can find them all quickly and delete them. Continuing that train of thought, it would also be useful to have check boxes next to those lines, and perhaps do a select all type of thing so they could be deleted in one mouse click.
@toggledbits I have finally finished up the SSL using Let's Encrypt and am getting this from my local browser:

I know you said in the docs that using a self-signed could lead to this but this is LE.
Hi @toggledbits,
I don't know if I'm the only one, so I'm reporting here first instead of opening a bug.
Basically, with the latest 2-3 updates of Reactor and MQTTController, after a restart previous statuses are lost (for both Virtual and MQTT entities), until they're restored.
It's particularly annoying for Virtual Entities, because I have to set them all over again (I've coded some defaults at startup if the values are empty, but sometimes these are not the correct values before the update).
Not easy to reproduce, and logs are gone, but the first time I tought it was me hallucinating, the second one didn't bother too much, after the third I realized it's something not coming from me.
the behavior could be seen in this screenshot:

Any hint is appreciated.
Build 21228 has been released. Docker images available from DockerHub as usual, and bare-metal packages here.
Home Assistant up to version 2021.8.6 supported; the online version of the manual will now state the current supported versions; Fix an error in OWMWeatherController that could cause it to stop updating; Unify the approach to entity filtering on all hub interface classes (controllers); this works for device entities only; it may be extended to other entities later; Improve error detail in messages for EzloController during auth phase; Add isRuleSet() and isRuleEnabled() functions to expressions extensions; Implement set action for lock and passage capabilities (makes them more easily scriptable in some cases); Fix a place in the UI where 24-hour time was not being displayed.I'm slowly migrating all my stuff to MQTT under MSR, so I have a central place to integrate everything (and, in a not-so-distant future, to remove virtual devices from my Vera and leave it running zwave only).
Anyway, here's my reactor-mqtt-contrib package:
Contrib MQTT templates for Reactor. Contribute to dbochicchio/reactor-mqtt-contrib development by creating an account on GitHub.
Simply download yaml files (everything or just the ones you need) and you're good to go.
I have mapped my most useful devices, but I'll add others soon. Feel free to ask for specific templates, since I've worked a lot in the last weeks to understand and operate them.
The templates are supporting both init and query, so you have always up-to-date devices at startup, and the ability to poll them. Online status is supported as well, so you can get disconnected devices with a simple expression.
Many-many thanks to @toggledbits for its dedication, support, and patience with me and my requests 🙂
Good morning,
So Home Assistant decided to change the default weather home format that I've been using for the past year and a half. I had two Global Expressions set up to pull the high and low temp forecast for the day. Now it's pulling null values.
094c9205-cc9e-4fcc-ac4f-1bf54acea299-image.png
In the dev tools, it now uses a new service (Weather. get forecasts), plural, where the old Weather.get forecast is depreciated and now longer functions.
8c7a1fcc-dd3f-4268-a0b7-29d542f86adc-image.png
It shows a templow field, and a temperature field, which I presume is the forecast high.
When I head back over to MSR, I'm having a hard time finding those values in the Entities tab.

Hey Patrick, I recently have been noticing that MSR has been acting up ie. it's been needing restarts and has been slow. I began trouble shooting by looking at the logs and have noticed the following errors for a lot of entities. I thought maybe a simple reboot of RPi was needed and I kept seeing the same errors in the system logs. I am oddly enough not seeing these same errors in the MSR logs. Where things started getting weird is whenever I rebooted MSR it wouldn't come back online .I would have to restart the RPi then it would come back online. I just restarted MSR again to capture logs and it restarted fine, so I guess its good for now? I think this is more or so a corrupted SD card issue rather a MSR issue but well being troubleshooting from here. The SD card is about 1-2 years old.
Apologies if this post is everywhere, I cannot consistently recreate any oddities that are happening, that's what is leading me to believe my SD is going bad.
PS: If anyone knows how to diagnose a corrupt SD card please chime in.

This system has been running flawlessly year after year for the time changes twice a year literally since MSR came out so I was caught off-guard when this happened this morning.
Time in MSR browser is EST, time on RPi is local time (DST).

What am I missing here @toggledbits ?
Hi,
For the standard capabilities MSR sends both a value record and a units record to InfluxDB. The latter I would like not to send as they are not really any use for me and it will reduce the number of records send to my InfluxDB.
Is there a quick way to do this with a filter_entities line like: *>units?
Or do I have to update all capabilities to read like this:
power_sensor:
attributes:
value: true
Cheers Rene
I'm trying to replicate this
wallbox_set_number.PNG
into a MQTT entity where I could set a number with a min and max value.
I can't find a standard capability that fits or any documentation on local MQTT capabilities and the only post on the forum mentioning local MQTT capabilities is this post, is it even possible in current release?
My trial and error work in local_mqtt_capabilities.yaml isn't much to show as it's just a copy of mqtt_capabilities.yaml with changed names and then I got stuck.
Any guidance, examples, documentation, future feature request or denial would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hi guys,
I've recently bought a new Govee outdoor permanent lights set, and I love it. WAF is pretty high, and the product is good quality. I hope to never run lights in the front of the house.
This new addition has found me searching for something to control these lights, locally. Govee has officials remote and LAN APIs and Home Assistant has it supported, but some undocumented stuff that's integrated into an Homebridge plugin that seems very promising. Without this plugin, my playlist is orchestrated via the cloud and that makes zero sense.
In the past I got some inspiration from plugins running on other platforms and Homebridge seems one of the most active. I could map its devices via HomeKit-local on HA, but I've decommissioned Homebridge years ago when we settled to Alexa (and I want to stay simple), so I had an idea: why get inspiration and rewrite things, when you could write an Homebridge adapter that could load any Homebridge plugin and run them natively under Reactor (MSR)?
I'm not sure if that's viable or made any sense, so I'm posting here to get feedback, encouragement and your thoughts. Anyone could be potentially interested in such a thing?
Hi- looking for a hint in where to start. My goal is to set a PIN code in a zwave kwikset lock triggered in a rule.
The device isn’t exposing methods to help. The x-hass.call-service looks promising, but what would the service name be?
Plan b would be send the zwave controller a config command- I don’t see any way to explicitly send a command through JS Zwave in my environment.
Running reactor bare metal. JS Zwave is running as an add on inside HASS OS.
Any tips are appreciated.
Hey crew, I'm trying to use MSR to control the RGB values of a Z-Wave bulb in Home Assistant.
Problem I'm running into - I would like to use 'rgb_color.set' to control this, but it doesn't work, instead it always passes the values '255,255,255' to HA no matter what values I enter within MSR.
More notes and examples below - I'm wondering if this is a formatting issue that I'm missing? Thanks for any help!
NOTES FROM TROUBLESHOOTING:
'rgb_color.set_rgb' works successfully, which seems strange. You'd think they would both be affected I've tried a couple different formats, like adding quotes, adding/removing spaces between the RGB values, nothing has fixed it.EXAMPLES:
When I use 'rgb_color.set_rgb', the values successfully carry over to Home Assistant:

But when I use 'rgb_color.set', the values DO NOT successfully carry over to Home Assistant:

Core 2024.2.5 Supervisor 2024.02.1 Operating System 12.0Hi,
I’m running MSR in a docker container on my Synology Nas. The container is automatically updated using watchtower weekly.
It was working. Now, after the update, Reactor webpage is able to load, and all indications on the webpage suggests that it is working fine. However, the updated statuses from Home Assistant and Vera are not being detected.
The container logs show the following error

Noticed right away last night at closing time that the open/close had become inverted with the update to v23326.
It wasn't an awful bit of lift to change all Reactions to reflect the change but it was jarring initially when everything flipped.
Are there release notes on that version, @toggledbits ?
Location of the rules on filesystem (.json etc) in HA Add-On
-
Info:
Home Assistant Yellow - 2023.12.3
Reactor Community Add-on
SSL/SFTP enabled on the HA YellowI'm trying to migrate from a Pi and MSR installed with docker compose to the community add-on inside HA.
I located all my rules etc in the pi at /home/pi/reactor/storage, but I cannot find where the addon created the storage folder/rules on the HA Yellow.
I've searched the homeassistant directory and everything in root also for these files using various methods including *.json and rule but I cannot locate them.I've a lot of rules and expressions, so need to copy rather than recreate them as I cant just export/import from reactor. I also want to be sure I can take reactor backups when needed on the HA Yellow
I posted an issue in the add-on maintainers github but they seem to respond to nothing posted there.
Any tips appreciated.
I also tried to just install using docker-compose in HAOS instead, but kept hitting the "Error response from daemon: error while creating mount source path '/home/': mkdir /home/reactordocker: read-only file system" error no matter what permissions were assigned to a folder or where I created it. I think perhaps because somethings containerised in that OS
-
@Cadwizzard While I may not be able to help you out fully I can point you in the right direction. HA OS hides the docker containers that the add ons run in and the only way to access them is via the SSH add-on. In the SSH add-ons config you will need to turn off protection mode so you can navigate above the
/homeassistant
directory. From there you can run docker commands to get the container info and navigate each docker container. Importing MSR configs are a little passed my knowledge so we'll let Patrick or anyone else handle that. -
Hi Pabla - Thanks for the tip. I disabled protection mode as I was trying to install my own docker container with MSR but kept hitting the write error above. (could only get the command to complete using \home and no subdirectories, but the files didnt appear still there and reactor looked running in cli but never presented the web page)
Update, found them for anyone else who needs them:
Inside the container at /data/reactor/storage/rulesWould be nice if there was a rules export/import option in the UI.
I suppose another question is, could I pull the updates to MSR in this container myself, the add-on maintainer isn't prompt to do that into the add-on.
(Once you have the rules into the addon initially, the HA plugin backup does handle them from there :
) -
@therealdb That was the whole problem - I Couldn't find the storage directory in the destination

Be Warned:
Just in case anyone else is using the Add-on in HA, There is an issue where global expressions all get deleted on host reboot.
I had created a test rule when i first installed the add-on. and restarted the host with no issues. I did this because on github add-on page people have complained global expressions get deleted on host reboot and I wanted to test)
Since then i've created 20 or so more and needed to reboot the host. I was greeted with all the new expressions missing, and only the test one i had deleted since showing again.
Interestingly a backup of the addon i had taken when everything was fine last night, contained only the test rule. So something isn't saving the live configuration properly somewhere.
My solution: (luckily had a backup of expressions.json from my old host)
export a reactor add-on backup, replace just the expressions.json using z-zip, reupload the backup and restore it.
I've checked /data/reactor/storage/ and the correct file is now there.
Unsure if this is related to the addon being latest-23063-c464b685 or not.If anyone knows if i can/a way to update this version inside the docker container the add-on creates, i'm all for trying it.
Maybe I could have copied this into the docker container, but I wanted to make sure I also had a backup that was restorable and copying into docker isn't as simple. -
@Cadwizzard said in Location of the rules on filesystem (.json etc) in HA Add-On:

Any time you back up a running system, you run the risk that data hasn't been flushed from cache to non-volatile storage. This applies to everything, not just Reactor.
-
@toggledbits That I understand.
But in case I was unclear above. I had a lot of saved and working global expressions that were lost after a host restart. They referred back to one test expression I'd previously created. I then went to the backup to find that was the sameIs there a way I could update this docker container myself to the latest version of msr. The add-on maintainer seems absent and I don't want to fall behind.
Docker is not at all my speciality but I can follow guides/instructions.
I used docker-compose on the pi, but on the HA Yellow it looks like HA OS is is protected and wipes out anything not in the homeassistant directory or the installed plugin containers (including when I installed the docker-compose plugin).
Would it just be a case of logging into the container and running the normal docker pull commands, or running them outside the container but specifying the docker container in the command? Many thanks!

Don't mean to highjack this thread, but when I do a reactor backup, reactor is usually running when the backup occurs. Should I instead shutdown reactor then back it up?

I wouldn't know (I didn't create the HA Add-On and I don't provide support for it), but maybe @mrw298 can produce an updated version?
-
@Pabla I've been running Reactor for years across many platforms and never ever had an issue with backups doing weird things - until running the add-on install.
I never saw it with a docker install as per toggledbits installation guides. This issue may be just related to the add-on as i've never heard of expressions disappearing before, until here and my install: https://github.com/mrw298/hassio-reactor-addon/issues

@toggledbits @mrw298 was last showing online here in March.
Thats why I was reaching out in this forum for wider experienceDo you or @Pabla happen to be able to answer a more generic question about Docker in the context of HA (and i'll run the risk myself of something going wrong).
Kind of forgetting that MSA was installed via the add-on, it currently exists in a docker container in HA yellow, which i can see and access via SSH
Should upgrading it mean running commands inside the container, or somehow specifying the addon container by name to update MSR inside it?I'm really trying to learn more about how docker updates/linux inter-relate, but MSR is literally the only use case i have for it. I'm not a linux specialist, more of Windows sysadmin with vmware etc and only touch linux/docker for Home Assistant/MSR and PiHole, so there is a lot of trial an error with this for me It's not yet clear about the possibilities or the best way to interact with docker after someone/thing else has created containers like in the add-on.
@toggledbits btw your guides are actually great when installing MSR from scratch, thanks for taking the time with the documentation, it really helped previously move from Vera to Pi and keep MSR on the same hardware.
Any tips really appreciated.

You could attach to the running Reactor container (typically) using
docker exec -it reactor /bin/sh
. This assumes that the container name isreactor
; you may need to usedocker ps
to establish the actual container name, or alternately, use its ID in thedocker exec
command. From there, you should be able to go to the directory above the container's running Reactor:
cd /opt
Then, you can download the latest Reactor:
wget 'https://reactor.toggledbits.com/download/latest/<image-tarball-name>'
Then, un-tar the image in place:
tar xvzf <image-tarball-name>
. This will overwrite the Reactor install files native to the container with the files from the downloaded tarball.Restart the container and it should be running on the installed/updated version.
A word of caution: This process only modifies the running docker container. It does not modify the image. I have no idea how HA handles the containers for add-ons. If the container is destroyed and recreated on every startup of HA or its add-ons, then your changes will go away, because the container is being rebuilt from the image, and the image has the original as-built Reactor files on it.
-
So, @toggledbits - thanks again.
It IS possible to update the docker container. It does survive a Home assistant restart..... but not a host reboot. The version reverts. So the container is rebuilt.I've built a test Pi with HAOS on it for testing outside of Prod.
I created one test rule and one global expression while testing the updates.Host reboot wiped out the global expressions again. @mrw298 There is definitely some fault with the add-on, this is a completely seperate install and hardware with no config, except the SSL and Reactor add-on installed.
I guess this leaves me to try to figure out where is safe to manually install reactor in HAOS and get round the "Error response from daemon: error while creating mount source path '[any path]': mkdir [any path]: read-only file system"
Update-
Actually the whole point of moving to HA Yellow was to be on a fully supported HAOS - So I'm going have to learn how to build my own local add-on to pull reactor into a supported container. My need is to run reactor on the same hardware as HA, and not have to rely on other plugin maintainers to stay in a supported MSR version@toggledbits - have you considered building a Home assistant Add-on for Reactor at all?
Thanks again
-
@Cadwizzard said in Location of the rules on filesystem (.json etc) in HA Add-On:

No. There's more to it than building, as you are finding out. That also means I have to support it, including understanding how to do remote troubleshooting and debugging in that environment. It's not on my radar right now.
-
@toggledbits thanks.
I've modified the build.sh from the other add-on and set up docker hub. Despite not fully being able to understand what and where Linux read/write errors actually arise from, I've got the files built and pushed. Had to use a pi to build the arm and aarch, then Ubuntu in Windows to build the amd64 due to errors and warnings about architecture. Unsure if that has to be that way, or they should be buildable from one platform or not.
This was the better idea as when I tried to update the other add-on container, msr warned about node.js being out of date by doing it that way.
I've got my version loading from a local plug in and pulled/running from GitHub now on my test install. Only thing to work out
Only thing left to work out is why the alerts/entities aren't updating, but I'm thinking that's because the default in msr points to a dns name for HA. Which is likely resolving to my prod HA Yellow (incorrect login alerts on there also point to that). Was a rush before I needed to head away. I'll backup/remove and pull the new add-on to my prod. hardware once at a computer I can work properly from, then copy the rulesets etc into a backup for that and re-export it.
Appreciate the tips from you and @Pabla
It's a bit more work to build the files and pull into my own add-on but it's better I have the control and still run a supported HA installUpdate: That was it, installed/updated Reactor on my HA Yellow, entities updating as expected
