Device log?
G
@toggledbits is there a log that will show me what rule is turning on a specific device? I've got a switch that has been kicking on at 2200 ET for several nights now and the reactor.log doesn't have a thing in it that I can see on a device level (it being more rules-based).

Reactor (Multi-System/Multi-Hub) Announcements

Build 21228 has been released. Docker images available from DockerHub as usual, and bare-metal packages here. Home Assistant up to version 2021.8.6 supported; the online version of the manual will now state the current supported versions; Fix an error in OWMWeatherController that could cause it to stop updating; Unify the approach to entity filtering on all hub interface classes (controllers); this works for device entities only; it may be extended to other entities later; Improve error detail in messages for EzloController during auth phase; Add isRuleSet() and isRuleEnabled() functions to expressions extensions; Implement set action for lock and passage capabilities (makes them more easily scriptable in some cases); Fix a place in the UI where 24-hour time was not being displayed.

Notice to Docker + ARM Users (RPi 3/4/5 and others)
toggledbitsT
This post does not apply to users of Intel/AMD-based systems. If you are using a Reactor image tagged latest-amd64 or stable-amd64, then this post does not apply to you. It also does not apply to bare-metal installs; it's for users of docker images on ARM-based systems only (principally Raspberry Pi hosts, but could be others). After January 15, 2026, I will no longer produce the aarch64-tagged docker image for Reactor. The ARM images will be arm64 for 64-bit operating systems, and armv7l for 32-bit operating systems. For those of you running a container from the aarch64 image today, this will be a relatively simple change: you just need to switch the image used for your docker container to a differently-tagged image. If you are using docker-compose, then this is a relatively simple matter of changing the image line in your docker-compose.yaml file and then stopping (docker-compose down) and restarting (docker-compose up -d) your Reactor daemon. But there's a catch... not all of you can safely just switch from the aarch64 image to the arm64 image. And, you can't just trust the output of uname -m, for example, because this exposes the CPU architecture, but not the word size of the OS running on that CPU. For Raspberry Pi systems, the transition to 64-bit operating systems was long (starting in 2016) and not always obvious — although there was a first "official" 64-bit OS for RPis in 2020, it did not become a default recommendation in the Raspberry Pi Imager until 2021, and then that was only the default for Pi 3/4 systems with >4GB RAM; it was 2022 before it was universally recommended for all 64-bit CPUs regardless of RAM size. Depending on when you first imaged your RPi system and what default you may have been offered/chosen, you could today easily have a 64-bit CPU Raspberry Pi running a 32-bit version of the operating system. Upgrades along the way would not change this; changing it to fully 64-bit requires a full reimage of the system. To establish if your OS is 64- or 32-bit, log in to your Pi and run: sudo dpkg-architecture -q DEB_HOST_ARCH. If the response is arm64 or aarch64, then you are running a 64-bit OS and you should use the arm64-tagged image. If it's anything else, you are running a 32-bit OS, and you should use the armv7l-tagged image. pi@rpi4-1:~ $ sudo dpkg-architecture -q DEB_HOST_ARCH armhf pi@rpi4-1:~ $ uname -m aarch64 pi@rpi4-1:~ $ In the example above, the uname command reports that the CPU is 64-bit architecture (aarch64), which is true for the host on which I ran these commands, but the DEB_HOST_ARCH value is armhf, indicating a 32-bit operating system. This system has to use the armv7l-tagged image. Other systems will have their own ways of determining the word size of the running OS. Since the majority of Reactor users running ARM systems are on Raspberry Pis, I am able to supply the above instructions, but if you happen to have a different ARM system, you'll need to do some web searching to figure out how to expose that information. Or, you can just try the arm64 image, and if it doesn't start up, try the armv7l image. Remember to always back up your system before making any changes. For everyone, please make this change as soon as possible, and if you have any trouble finding a working image, please (1) go back to the current aarch64 image; and (2) let me know in this thread along with as much detail about your host system as you can offer (including the output of the dpkg-architecture command mentioned above).

Requesting a proper ARM64/aarch64 Docker image (Pi 5 support)
M
Hi, I'm in the process of migrating from a Raspberry Pi 4 (ARMv7) to a Raspberry Pi 5 (ARMv8/aarch64), but I’ve run into an issue: there is no proper ARMv8/aarch64 image available. None of the existing images run on the Pi 5 - they all exit immediately with code 139 (segmentation fault), which typically indicates that the binaries inside the image are not compatible with the ARM64/aarch64 architecture used by the Pi 5. Would it be possible to publish a correct ARMv8/aarch64 (linux/arm64) image? Building one should be relatively straightforward using docker buildx with multi-arch support. For example, my own Node.js images are built this way: docker buildx build --push \ -t <localrepo>/<project>:<tag> \ --platform=linux/arm64,linux/amd64 \ --file ./apps/<project>/Dockerfile . This produces both the AMD64 and ARM64/v8 variants automatically. Also, as a side note, it may be best to avoid using Alpine as the base image for the ARM64 build, since musl-based builds often cause compatibility issues and unnecessary headaches. A glibc-based base image (e.g., Debian or Ubuntu) tends to work far more reliably on ARM64, especially for Node.js applications. @toggledbits - tagging you in case you missed this. Thanks, mgvra

Script action and custom timers
therealdbT
Sorry to write here without trying, but I’m flying today. Am I correct if i say that script action with alarm() makes it possible to execute a reaction in a given interval, lets say 15 seconds or 3.5 minutes? That sounds amazing, since I’ve used weird tricks, including a custom controller, just to do this.

Reactor Version 25310 : Office Light control via rule in reactor no longer working since last update.
P
Hello, I currently have an office light (connected via a Leviton Zwave Dimmer switch) controlled from a Gen5 Aeotech Zwave switch installed on my Synology 720+ NAS. I run HA(2025.11.10) in a virtual machine from my NAS and Reactor on the container manager of the same NAS. Prior to updating to 25304 the rule I had set to turn the light on to a specific dimming value worked correctly. Now the rule appears to follow the decision tree, however the reaction does not trigger setting the dimming or turning on the office light? Strangely I can still turn the light on and off as well as dim it directly from HASS..? I have tried using the ''try this action'' button in the rules reaction setting and it will not control the light and does not throw an error flagÉ Please help, P.S Reactor has been rock steady for me over the last few years and I'm a big fan of this solution.

Handling Dead Entities and Renamed Entities
PablaP
Hello all.. been a minute! I recently rebuilt my Z wave network and migrated to a new z wave stick. In order to prevent any downtime I kept my original z wave network up and ran a docker version of Z Wave JS UI with my new controller. This way I could add device by device without having any devices down. I finally moved all the devices over to my new stick today. The final step was to migrate everything from my Docker instance of Z Wave JS UI to the HA add-on of Z Wave JS UI. However during this migration some of the names didn't populate correctly which I later managed to import back into Z Wave JS UI. The issue was in Reactor it is stuck on the default names and the entities are not updating. I removed the controller from Reactor, restarted, hard refreshed, and added the controller back however the new entity names have not updated. Also it seems like the old entities from my previous instance of Z Wave JS UI are lingering and not being marked as dead (I believe a certain amount of time needs to lapse before they're marked as dead in Reactor). My goal is to basically purge all the entities for the 'ZWaveJS' controller in Reactor so it can pull all the updated entity names and only the entities that exist in Z Wave JS UI. I cannot find a quick way to do this, I know entities can be deleted one by one, but with over 100 entities this would take long I am guessing that if I added the controller with a new name in in the Reactor config it would pull the updated entities and names but I think that would break my rules since the entity IDs would change (I made sure to name all the entities the exact same as they were previously to prevent this issue).

Hi Pabla - Thanks for the tip. I disabled protection mode as I was trying to install my own docker container with MSR but kept hitting the write error above. (could only get the command to complete using \home and no subdirectories, but the files didnt appear still there and reactor looked running in cli but never presented the web page)

Update, found them for anyone else who needs them:
    Inside the container at /data/reactor/storage/rules

    Screenshot 2023-12-27 125839.png

Would be nice if there was a rules export/import option in the UI.

I suppose another question is, could I pull the updates to MSR in this container myself, the add-on maintainer isn't prompt to do that into the add-on.

(Once you have the rules into the addon initially, the HA plugin backup does handle them from there :

Just copy the entire storage and config directories. Then modify your config if needed. That’s backup/restore in MSR world.

          Be Warned:
Just in case anyone else is using the Add-on in HA, There is an issue where global expressions all get deleted on host reboot.
I had created a test rule when i first installed the add-on. and restarted the host with no issues. I did this because on github add-on page people have complained global expressions get deleted on host reboot and I wanted to test)
Since then i've created 20 or so more and needed to reboot the host. I was greeted with all the new expressions missing, and only the test one i had deleted since showing again.
Interestingly a backup of the addon i had taken when everything was fine last night, contained only the test rule. So something isn't saving the live configuration properly somewhere.
My solution: (luckily had a backup of expressions.json from my old host)
export a reactor add-on backup, replace just the expressions.json using z-zip, reupload the backup and restore it.
I've checked /data/reactor/storage/ and the correct file is now there.
Unsure if this is related to the addon being latest-23063-c464b685 or not.

If anyone knows if i can/a way to update this version inside the docker container the add-on creates, i'm all for trying it.
Maybe I could have copied this into the docker container, but I wanted to make sure I also had a backup that was restorable and copying into docker isn't as simple.

Any time you back up a running system, you run the risk that data hasn't been flushed from cache to non-volatile storage. This applies to everything, not just Reactor.

              @toggledbits That I understand.
But in case I was unclear above. I had a lot of saved and working global expressions that were lost after a host restart. They referred back to one test expression I'd previously created. I then went to the backup to find that was the same 🙂

Is there a way I could update this docker container myself to the latest version of msr. The add-on maintainer seems absent and I don't want to fall behind.
Docker is not at all my speciality but I can follow guides/instructions.
I used docker-compose on the pi, but on the HA Yellow it looks like HA OS is is protected and wipes out anything not in the homeassistant directory or the installed plugin containers (including when I installed the docker-compose plugin).
Would it just be a case of logging into the container and running the normal docker pull commands, or running them outside the container but specifying the docker container in the command?

              Many thanks!

I wouldn't know (I didn't create the HA Add-On and I don't provide support for it), but maybe @mrw298 can produce an updated version?

Don't mean to highjack this thread, but when I do a reactor backup, reactor is usually running when the backup occurs. Should I instead shutdown reactor then back it up?

@Pabla I've been running Reactor for years across many platforms and never ever had an issue with backups doing weird things - until running the add-on install.
I never saw it with a docker install as per toggledbits installation guides.

This issue may be just related to the add-on as i've never heard of expressions disappearing before, until here and my install: https://github.com/mrw298/hassio-reactor-addon/issues

@toggledbits @mrw298 was last showing online here in March.
Thats why I was reaching out in this forum for wider experience 🙂

Do you or @Pabla happen to be able to answer a more generic question about Docker in the context of HA (and i'll run the risk myself of something going wrong).

Kind of forgetting that MSA was installed via the add-on, it currently exists in a docker container in HA yellow, which i can see and access via SSH
Should upgrading it mean running commands inside the container, or somehow specifying the addon container by name to update MSR inside it?

I'm really trying to learn more about how docker updates/linux inter-relate, but MSR is literally the only use case i have for it. I'm not a linux specialist, more of Windows sysadmin with vmware etc and only touch linux/docker for Home Assistant/MSR and PiHole, so there is a lot of trial an error with this for me 🙂 It's not yet clear about the possibilities or the best way to interact with docker after someone/thing else has created containers like in the add-on.

@toggledbits btw your guides are actually great when installing MSR from scratch, thanks for taking the time with the documentation, it really helped previously move from Vera to Pi and keep MSR on the same hardware.

                      Any tips really appreciated.

You could attach to the running Reactor container (typically) using docker exec -it reactor /bin/sh. This assumes that the container name is reactor; you may need to use docker ps to establish the actual container name, or alternately, use its ID in the docker exec command.

From there, you should be able to go to the directory above the container's running Reactor: cd /opt

Then, you can download the latest Reactor:

                            wget 'https://reactor.toggledbits.com/download/latest/<image-tarball-name>'

Then, un-tar the image in place: tar xvzf <image-tarball-name>. This will overwrite the Reactor install files native to the container with the files from the downloaded tarball.

Restart the container and it should be running on the installed/updated version.

A word of caution: This process only modifies the running docker container. It does not modify the image. I have no idea how HA handles the containers for add-ons. If the container is destroyed and recreated on every startup of HA or its add-ons, then your changes will go away, because the container is being rebuilt from the image, and the image has the original as-built Reactor files on it.

                          So, @toggledbits - thanks again.
It IS possible to update the docker container. It does survive a Home assistant restart..... but not a host reboot. The version reverts. So the container is rebuilt.

I've built a test Pi with HAOS on it for testing outside of Prod.
I created one test rule and one global expression while testing the updates.

Host reboot wiped out the global expressions again. @mrw298 There is definitely some fault with the add-on, this is a completely seperate install and hardware with no config, except the SSL and Reactor add-on installed.

I guess this leaves me to try to figure out where is safe to manually install reactor in HAOS and get round the "Error response from daemon: error while creating mount source path '[any path]': mkdir [any path]: read-only file system"
                          Update-
Actually the whole point of moving to HA Yellow was to be on a fully supported HAOS - So I'm going have to learn how to build my own local add-on to pull reactor into a supported container. My need is to run reactor on the same hardware as HA, and not have to rely on other plugin maintainers to stay in a supported MSR version 🙂

@toggledbits - have you considered building a Home assistant Add-on for Reactor at all?

                          Thanks again

No. There's more to it than building, as you are finding out. That also means I have to support it, including understanding how to do remote troubleshooting and debugging in that environment. It's not on my radar right now.

                              @toggledbits thanks.
I've modified the build.sh from the other add-on and set up docker hub. Despite not fully being able to understand what and where Linux read/write errors actually arise from, I've got the files built and pushed. Had to use a pi to build the arm and aarch, then Ubuntu in Windows to build the amd64 due to errors and warnings about architecture. Unsure if that has to be that way, or they should be buildable from one platform or not.
This was the better idea as when I tried to update the other add-on container, msr warned about node.js being out of date by doing it that way.
I've got my version loading from a local plug in and pulled/running from GitHub now on my test install. Only thing to work out
Only thing left to work out is why the alerts/entities aren't updating, but I'm thinking that's because the default in msr points to a dns name for HA. Which is likely resolving to my prod HA Yellow (incorrect login alerts on there also point to that). Was a rush before I needed to head away. I'll backup/remove and pull the new add-on to my prod. hardware once at a computer I can work properly from, then copy the rulesets etc into a backup for that and re-export it.
Appreciate the tips from you and @Pabla
It's a bit more work to build the files and pull into my own add-on but it's better I have the control and still run a supported HA install 🙂

Update: That was it, installed/updated Reactor on my HA Yellow, entities updating as expected 🙂
