I am realizing that a lot of the zwave devices I use are nearly impossible to buy so I may end up having to take everything with me...
...does that tell us anything about Zwave (or not?)
-
Any reason you want Z-Wave in particular?

Could be. with the avent of CHIP now called MATTER, there seems to be a plan to move to a new protocol: Thread.
The big tech appear to want to use a multi protocol scheme for Matter:
BT for the initial pairing process then move to WiFi for the high bandwidth devices (like cameras or roaming vacuum robots) and Thread for the others. It indeed seems like the end of the road is approaching for zigbee and zwave. In the meantime the proliferation of wifi ESP based devices which I don't see as scalable or technically sound solution is taking place... -

No indeed, ...but I do like my Shellies!

I noticed!
But since I have been playing with RF meters and spectrum analyzers, and am very focused on optimizing my wifi bandwidth, and energy consumptions, I see them as being wasteful. I understand they are cheap and they work well but there are better ways (albeit with a more involved setup) to do what they do... zwave is one of them but thread seems to be the next big thing. -
I’m not so much besotted by the fact that they use WiFi, it’s just the ease of setup, integration within the system, and general ‘fit and forget’... it just couldn’t be further from Zwave in that regard.

I was very skeptical about Shelly when they first came out; WiFi --phutt why bother, it has to be Z-Wave I thought - How wrong could I be.
After using the Dimmer 2 I couldn't get enough of them.
How is it that Z-Wave could be so convoluted in setting up when a relative new comer to the market makes it so simple?
My thoughts - FWIW - Z-wave has become over complicated that even professional installers baulk at the mention of Z-Wave and are turning to KNX systems because they know they won't get phone calls or call outs about latency - realistically KNX does not cost that much more than Z-Wave and you can sleep at night knowing the system works instantly.
Best of all is that there are KNX plugins for most systems and you can take advantage of all protocols - after all it is IOT :} -
I understand, especially coming from the vera which made zwave such a nightmare. I understand a lot of people jumped on it due to convenience... I however don't have any problem with zwave anymore and actually found managing my zwave network very easy... probably as easy and maybe easier than my wifi/ethernet network from a security perspective. It is the fundamental RF physics and network architecture behind it which makes me cringe. It is just the wrong solution to a simple problem. Sacrificing an IP address and airtime in my high bandwidth RF protocol for something which shouldn't even need 100th of what it generates and consumes just to make it easy to setup... no thank you. I will spend the extra minute to set it up and not generate all that noise and waste for the several years to come.

I have a Secure unit and boiler control.
Ditto.. Although mine is badged Hortsmann
