    • What does [Error] terminated [-] mean?

      Snowman

      Post has been updated.

Need some guidance in determining what this error means.

Running Reactor latest-23078-d592d400; ZWaveJSController; Docker on Synology; Home Assistant 2023.3.6; Z-Wave JS UI 8.11.1

I have searched the site and could not find anything related to my question.

I know what the rule does. Yet, I cannot find the relationship with this error.

If someone could point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated.

      Thanks in advance

      Rule is as follow:

If the garage side door opens when the alarm is not armed and that both my spouse and I are at home:

Set Reaction: turn on the Siren_8 (basically a two seconds beep that was configured with the Aeotec Siren to warn us that the door is open)

Reset Reaction: turn off the Siren_8 in case it wants to keep beeping

      Error terminated.jpg

      Here's the updated error.

    • Light automation thoughts

      CatmanV2

      Hi all

Looking for some ideas about how I might be able to automate my lights.

Currently I have Fibaro FGMS001 (combined lux / motion / temperature sensors)

I can currently get the lights to come on in a room by simply implying that lux <100 and the movement sensor is tripped. That's not so bad, although it's a bit crude.

      Struggling more with:
Keeping them on: I've turned the motion sensitivity up quite a lot, but when (fore example) reading in bed, they trip off
Extending a timer (so there's a minimum time of 'on' after trip) needs to get quite high, such that you might be in a room for 10 seconds, and the lights stay on for 20 minutes.

      Any bright ideas?

      Cheers

Hello guys. I'm currently building my own home and i want it to be kind of high tech and cool but i have actually never owned a smart device other than a smartphone and an old smart TV so i don't even know what exactly am i looking for. I will explain my idea and i am looking forward to somebody shining some light.

Sooo - i was thinking about getting a WiFi controlled AC, TV, Washing machine, Dryer and smart switches for the lights. I suppose i need some kind of a assistant that connects to the wifi and can control all of these. Also i want an audio system - for the TV in the living room aaaand i also want to have 2 speakers in the bathroom which i have no idea where i would connect. I guees i need some kind of a receiver and amplifier for them to work correctly. But i also want that reciever to be hidden somewhere so it ahould be small and it also should be able to connect to the wifi i guess.
So wgat exactly do i need so far. Would any wifi device connect to any assistant? Or am i lookng for particullar stuff... Will i be able for example to turn on my AC from outside the household for example when im at work? And can i also connect an alarm system of some type?

Tell me about an iot program called openLuup.

      It:

OpenLuup is an open source home automation system that is built on the VeraLuup platform. It is designed to be easy to install and configure, and provides users with a powerful and versatile way to control their home automation devices. OpenLuup offers a wide range of features, including support for many popular home automation devices, scheduling, scripting, and integration with other services. OpenLuup is designed to be customizable, allowing users to create their own home automation systems. It is an excellent choice for those looking to create their own home automation system without spending a lot of money.

      Me:

Write an iot program using openLuup.

      It:

      --openLuup IoT Program-- -- Initialize Variables -- local device_id = "MyHomeDevice" local temperature_sensor_id = "MyTemperatureSensor" local temperature_threshold = 75 -- Create Devices -- luup.create_device("OpenLuup Temperature Sensor", 0, device_id, "D_GenericSensor1.xml", "I_GenericSensor1.xml", "S_TemperatureSensor1.xml", "") luup.variable_set("urn:upnp-org:serviceId:TemperatureSensor1", "CurrentTemperature", 0, device_id) -- Start Timer -- luup.call_delay("check_temperature", 10, "", false) --Function to Check Temperature-- function check_temperature() local current_temperature = luup.variable_get(temperature_sensor_id, "CurrentTemperature", 0) --Check Temperature Threshold-- if current_temperature >= temperature_threshold then --Send Alert-- luup.call_action("urn:micasaverde-com:serviceId:HomeAutomationGateway1", "SendTextMessage", {PhoneNumber="1234567890", Message="ALERT!       Me:

Write an iot program using openLuup.

      It:

Write an iot program using openLuup. -- openLuup IOT Program -- -- Variables local lampState = false local lampTime = 0 -- Functions function lampTimer() if lampTime > 0 then lampTime = lampTime - 1 if lampTime == 0 then luup.variable_set('urn:upnp-org:serviceId:SwitchPower1', 'Status', 0, lampDeviceID) lampState = false end end end -- Setup luup.call_delay('lampTimer', 60, 0) -- Main Loop while true do -- Check for motion if luup.variable_get('urn:micasaverde-com:serviceId:MotionSensor1', 'Tripped', motionSensorDeviceID) == '1' then if not lampState then luup.variable_set('urn:upnp-org:serviceId:SwitchPower1', 'Status', 1, lampDeviceID) lampState = true -- Set lamp timer to 5 minutes lampTime = 300 end end luup.sleep(1) end

      What??

      luup.sleep(1)

Not good - looks like I still have some semblance of a job to fulfill.

      Me:

An iot program called openLuup was written by akbooer. Who is akbooer?

It: (note: answer redacted and as I understand it, also incorrect re: AltUI):

akbooer is the pseudonym of the software developer and home automation enthusiast. He is the creator of the openLuup home automation software, which is an open-source version of the Vera home automation system. He is also the creator of the AltUI graphical user interface for openLuup.

      Me:

Who created of the AltUI graphical user interface for openLuup.

      and

      Me:

Who created of the AltUI graphical user interface for the home automation system Vera.

Names two different people - mmmm.

Regardless very impressive - give it a few more years.

    • Local expressions not evaluated in rules (MQTTController based entities)

      M

      Some background

I have MQTTController based entities that I want to use in time calculations in my rules. These entities represent two separate time ranges, one for the weekdays and the other for the weekends. In this particular example they are used to control my doorbell activity (whether it's enabled or disabled).

MQTT message which is used to update the entities. NOTE: time is in 24h format

      { "data": { "weekdays": { "enable": "09:28", "disable": "20:00" }, "weekends": { "enable": "09:00", "disable": "21:00" } } }

Entity definitions (here's only the definition for the weekdays for brevity)

      doorbell-weekdays-enable: name: 'Ovikello päälle (arkisin)' topic: 'doorbell/settings' capabilities: - string_sensor primary_attribute: string_sensor.value events: "%topic%": "string_sensor.value": json_payload: true expr: "payload.data.weekdays.enable" doorbell-weekdays-disable: name: 'Ovikello pois päältä (arkisin)' topic: 'doorbell/settings' capabilities: - string_sensor primary_attribute: string_sensor.value events: "%topic%": "string_sensor.value": json_payload: true expr: "payload.data.weekdays.disable"

I have verified that the entities are populated correctly and the values are working in local expressions.

The entity (only the range start for brevity):
      Screenshot from 2023-03-22 09-27-54.png

      The rule:
      Screenshot from 2023-03-22 09-28-28.png

And the local expression within the rule:

      weekdays_enabled = (time() >= time(getEntity( "mqtt>doorbell-weekdays-enable" ).attributes.string_sensor.value )) && (time() <= time(getEntity( "mqtt>doorbell-weekdays-disable" ).attributes.string_sensor.value ))

      The problem
Local expression doesn't seem to evaluate to true even if the current time gets within the range. But if the related entities are updated, then the expression is evaluated and the rule is triggered.

As seen from the screenshots, the current time is 09:28:12 and the start time in corresponding entity is set to 09:28. But still the rule is not triggered. However, if I update the entity e.g. to 09:27, the local expression will get evaluated and the rule is triggered.

My understanding is that the local expression is working correctly but since it's not evaluated, it will not trigger the rule.

Is this a bug or have I misunderstood something? If so, how should I implement this kind of functionality?

      mgvra

I "activated" a Hubitat C8 (ethernet connected) at Site Two including the installation of Hub Information Driver and its associated device. I also installed a single zwave outlet module (GE ZW4202). I restarted MSR. The C8 and its associated devices appear on both the Entities page and the MSR Dashboard, but the C8 reports as down on the MSR Status page and the GE outlet does not respond when "clicked". I am not sure where to look to try to find the source of the problem and will greatly appreciate any suggestions.

    • [Solved] Expressions - predefining a variable type

I have a use case where I need to have a boolean variable that will be set to true/false by reactions.

I see that i can define a local variable by giving it a name and leaving the definition empty. This leaves it at state "null" until a reaction tells it that its a boolean.

Is there a way to tell it that it should start out as "false" (i.e when reactor has restarted), and not null?

Am i going about this the wrong way?

    • Logic Programming

      akbooer

Home Automation means you have to have a way of describing the logical steps you want your home to implement automatically.

Whilst I've always been a fan of the Lua language, as used in Vera (and openLuup) for scenes and plugins, it's perhaps not ideal. For this reason, there has been a long development history of plugins with their own "language" to help define the automation logic: PLEG (for those with a long memory), AltUI workflows, Rules Engine, Reactor, MSR, ...

It's always seemed to me that the 'best' way of describing logic would be a language designed for that purpose – a "logic programming language". Perhaps one of the most famous, and venerable, is Prolog, which had its fiftieth birthday last year in 2022.

Thanks to some relatively recent research A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Reinventing a Prolog Machine, Paul Tarau (2017) it's become possible to implement a very efficient Prolog engine in a reasonably concise way. So, just for fun, I'm developing a CGI plugin for describing openLuup actions in Prolog.

I have an early prototype running (written in Lua, of course). It presents a web page which looks like a fairly typical Interactive Development Environment (IDE) and contains some primitives which allow basic access to the Luup engine.

    • MQTT Controller and extended capabilities

      M

I'm a little bit confused how to configure extended capabilities for the entities in the MQTTController.

mqtt_cababilities.yaml states that: "...You can add your own capabilities by adding a "capabilities" section to your own local_mqtt_capabilities.yaml file in your config directory."

So I did this in my local_mqtt_capabilities.yaml in the config directory:

version: 22353 revision: 1 format: 1 capabilities: x_my_config: attributes: partyMode: type: bool actions: some_action: topic: '%topic/write' payload: "some value"

And in my reactor.yaml I have following configuration entry:

      my-config: name: 'My custom configuration' topic: 'my-config' query: "%topic%/read" init: "%topic%/read" capabilities: - x_my_config primary_attribute: x_my_config.partyMode events: "%topic%/status": "x_my_config.partyMode": json_payload: true expr: "payload.partyMode"

This sort of works but not quite. The partyMode attribute gets updated when messages arrive for that specific topic, so that's fine. But I don't see x_my_config capability in the Capabilities list in the UI and also the some_action is missing.

      Screenshot from 2023-03-09 19-42-49.png

Addition to that the primary value is not set and I'm getting the following error:
      Screenshot from 2023-03-09 19-30-42.png

Have I completely misunderstood the idea behind the capability extension and the attributes? If so, could someone point me to the right direction with few explanatory example configs.

What I'm trying to achieve is a set of configuration options that could be updated thru the MQTT, and also provide some actions that the rules could invoke.

    • Separate switching bulb in one ceiling light

      P

      Hello guys,

I would like to achieve two different things with lights, but I am not sure it could be done. I am starting with smart things, and I am far from any electrician knowledge, wo any help is really appreciated.

I have dumb switches in my hall, controlled from 3 places. I understood that installing one smart module before first switch will make them "hybrid", both smart controlled and dumb controlled.

I would like to buy ceiling light with two bulb sockets. What I would like to achieve is I would like to have one bulb for normal daily usage (lets say cold white full brightness), and second for night time (aprox from 10pm till morning) with some red/orange - minimum brightness.

      So question are:

Is there a way to keep both bulbs turning-on separated? So only one will be on during day, and then only second during night?

And could that be done with pressing dumb switch? What would I need to achieve it? (maybe another module into the ceiling lights)

      Thank you in advance

    • Installing MQTTController on Home Assistant Core when Reactor is installed as an Add-In (VirtualBox)

      W

Running Home Assistant Core under VirtualBox (on Windows) and Reactor is installed and working fine as an add-in. What I can't figure out is how to install MQTTController in this situation. I can upload the files and unzip them, but I can't run install.sh in a terminal window because npm is not a part of the Core installation.

It does appear that somewhere in the stack there is a version of docker there between VirtualBox and HA, (I see some references go by in the VirtualBox startup log) but it appears minimal and will not execute the install via the docker technique in your documentation from the VB console.

Is there a way to do this?

Guys, the best possible answer is to make our home automation setup work the way we want it in reliable and efficient manner, with or without our EOL veras but with each other's help. That's what we are seeking after all. While keeping our minds open, exploring all the novelties and discussing what we can do to continuously innovate improve and optimize. The vera had an awesome forum with tremendous community of developers. I sensed the end of an era and as much of our time and energy we have spent there, it was not all wasted. The best answer is to move on, not only for the sake of answering but also to refocus on what we aim to do: A community to grow, develop, debate, explore smart home technologies.

    • Forum Mission Statement

Who are we, what is our purpose? A community of smart home user or fans who felt the need for an independent place to share our experience, discuss novelties and ideas and test/develop better tools for home automation. Many of us come from the old Vera community but feel there is a space for non-partisan space to discuss the technology.

Everybody from any platform is welcome to discuss and share even though many of us are starting from the Vera and its much improved derivate, openLuup. We would only ask to for everyone to remain respectful and courteous to one another. Yes! even technical discussions can become heated as opinions can conflict. We respect everyone’s opinion and decisions and expect the same from others.

This forum is hosted benevolently by long time Vera community member DesT.

I've asked for them to delete my account, but they say "the jury's still out" in the case of the "SHC mutineers". 🙄 😉

Did they actually use the term "mutineers" there?
Are they actually serious? Do they still think that we are properties/employees/soldiers they should have any sort of control over? I hope not.

They are booting the most loyal customers, ones who are willing to spend their time providing free customer support to others, sharing their fixes and findings to the community. Customers who are also providing them feedback to make their products better... He forced the creation of this forum with censorship then accuses people of all kinds of things and now is surprised that people are leaving? 😲

Trust me only a very small number of those who have left are here. Many more are on many other platforms ranging from Homeseer to Hubitat to Home Assistant. And the cold hard truth is, that everyone has been much better off after leaving, has a much more reliable and capable system and for those who rely on community forums, have a place to discuss and have fun learning again.

      @cw-kid

Been trying to refrain myself from replying but here we go...
Instead of repeating what I have said in the past, my view is that ezlo and its leader have a very different view of the market and possibly do not understand what they bought by merging vera.

      But the basics are:

"But what can you do. Both sides have done things to upset the other."
Sorry but one has to put the context as to who is who back in place here. There is no circumstance under which a business owner should ever treat their customers this way. For anyone running a business, if a customer is upset, you should first asking why. Instead the guy keeps doing what upsets his customers and starts insulting and calling them names. That's unprofessional and unheard of.

"I think he feels you are all against the Ezlo platform and its future success and you just want your Vera firmware as is, to hack."

Again, instead of feeling this way, he should be asking why? Being the one who tore down the firmware down to the OS level, I think I can speak of it. Certainly "as is" is incorrect. The whys:

      1. Because it's broken
      2. Most of the fixes are trivial
      3. They significantly improve the vera
      4. They are not fixing it themselves.

Now on the understanding of this home automation market. If you run a market survey, you will see that the vast majority if not all platforms today rely to various degree on community development of external integration, cloud or local, and run on increasingly more powerful hardware. When they bought vera, they inherited a community, a small remnant of hardcore users who have extended the life of the vera to its limits trying to maintain the platform on par with the competition but still somewhat behind. A large number of people have already jumped ship quietly. The most vocal people on the forum are the most loyal supporters of the platform and many stay because of the technical migration barrier to other platforms. I think we were all excited about the prospective of a new hub and an updated platform. I was all in. There are however two bare minimum critical requirements to a new hub:

      1. Functional equivalency, including all the integrations the plugins supported
      2. An ease of migration from a vera installation to the new hub.

Sadly what I have observed is a complete disdain of these basic requirements and a development strategy aiming straight down the toilet (excessive focus on mobile app and cloud base processing, disregard of the critical wireless stacks and repeat of past mistakes in conception of the API) while the current product gets increasingly far behind competitive platforms, including open source ones. I kept an open mind, not being an expert on the software side but expressing a lot of concerns. The increasing amount of spamming of the forum with "exciting breakthroughs" and "pure innovations" of things the community has been able to do and better/faster/simpler for years combined with the release of an underwhelming hardware for the new controller, clearly pointing to a focus on minimum cost at the compromise of extendibility and reliability and you can clearly see my disappointment. That was the last straw for me. I predicted last year that the platform would not be ready in a year because of their approach... look at where they are now.
In the meantime, I have moved my zwave network to z-way. Stunningly, the migration is easier than to go from vera to ezlo and it felt like jumping from the stone age to science fiction. Everything became lighning fast... All my secure class problems and latency issues gone. I can no longer find any unsupported devices... etc... And all of my previous integrations are retained and more. So yeah I can see why he is upset but he can only be so at himself. Taking it out on his most loyal customers is... well you're the judge.

    • RE: Vera firmware 7.32 beta

I have been mostly silent on this forum for some time now with the exception of the occasional notifications for questions addressed to me because I just moved to a new house and my system had been rock solid for over a year... mostly since I got rid of the vera.

I now have to re-build everything from scratch in my new house while I had literally zero reliability issues with my previous setup in spite of its complexity (200+ devices integrated running 3 different software platform interconnected between z-way for zwave, Homeassistant for AI/cameras and the rare cloud integrations or integrations not existing on openLuup/vera and openLuup for scenes/automation/control interface.)
I considered long and hard to sell my old home with the automation but at the end I decided to move as much as I could over mostly because I noticed an increasing trend of the industry to go towards wifi for ease of setup but which cannot scale to large installations and have to encroach into wifi bandwidth. It is getting a bit harder to buy zwave and even zigbee devices. I also didn't want to spend the time to go through the learning curve of hubitat which would have yielded no benefit to my setup.
Dumping the vera was the single biggest improvement to my system and please, no ezlo... They are cost reduced and downgraded controllers to the vera in every important practical aspect.

My new setup will be much lighter. Probably will not get to 175 zwave nodes, more likely <100 without the window coverings, fewer lights, fewer sensors. Heck I think I will dump the Phillips hue altogether too. I can't recommend enough migrating away from vera and go to openLuup or MSR in combination with Home Assistant for zigbee and integrations and z-way for z-wave while keeping devices as local as possible by avoiding all the wifi stuff which tend to be cloud dependent (with all their reliability and security disadvantages) and less efficient both in power and RF bandwidth. Still a new adventure...

My ring doorbell fell victim of my cloud dependance eradication project a few years ago, so I can't help with that one. I can only recommend replacing it with the one I am using... Superior in every way by offering a local 3MP RTSP stream, 5GHz wifi. It's already 3 years old but I haven't found anything better since. The only thing I wish it had is H.265 encoding. Mine is still going strong and is integrated into my system. I run facial recognition on it to trigger a variety of scenes on openLuup.

    • RE: Smart home with no WIFI

Euhh, I think something is amiss here. Why running everything off of Zigbee have anything to do with getting internet in the future? If you get a hubitat, your hub will be hubitat. Wifi is just a different type of wireless network communication like zigbee and zwave. They just work on different protocols and frequencies and have different purposes:

WIFI or WLAN is meant for high bandwidth, high power devices like your mobile computer and is meant to offer a bandwidth as close as possible to the wired ethernet (LAN) network it is piggy backed to. Not the most appropriate for smarthomes and especially for battery operated devices because it consumes more power and each device uses bandwidth. Given how little bandwidth smarthome device require, the communication overhead associated with WIFI makes it very wasteful but at this day in age, some people may have plenty of wifi bandwidth to use...

Zwave is a dedicated smarthome protocol which has a fairly good universality mostly due to the fact that it was controller by a single company. Devices tend to be more expensive as a result but prices have been dropping.

Zigbee is another dedicated smarthome protocol but it operates in the same wireless frequency band as WIFI. It is more opened and a lot of companies are involved in maintaining it and therefore has taken off quite nicely.

Zigbee and Zwave require a controller like Hubitat which also need to connect a wired network through ethernet. The controller would have both the radio and small computer on board in which you would setup a software from which to control your devices.
WIFI on the other hand, because of the ubiquity of its use, reuses the radio either on your WIFI router or WIFI access point but usually sends the controlling software out in the cloud so you would need internet access. There are also platforms which enables WIFI devices to be controller locally with a software you would download from the internet.

Internet Access and WIFI are not the same. You can have internet access without WIFI or WIFI without internet access. Typically internet access comes in through a MODEM be it from Cable, Telephone or Fibre. There also now 4G/LTE Modem which enable connection to the cellular internet service which would be slower and more expensive and then output it through wire.

Your smarthome fundamentally doesn't need WIFI or internet access but you do need a home wired network in any case to be able to access your controller. Adding WIFI or internet later has no impact whatsoever on your Zwave or Zigbee setup.

    • RE: Smart home with no WIFI

Most of us use both for flexibility. Zigbee has cheaper devices and some devices only exist on zigbee. Z-wave also has some unique devices. Since you won't have wifi, you probably don't care that Zigbee interferes with Wifi but also microwave ovens, BT and most cordless phones.... Wifi is a very inefficient protocol for RF. Z-wave is the most efficient from an energy consumption and RF emission perspective, closely followed by Zigbee. I avoid wifi smarthome devices myself because they are fundamentally a waste of bandwidth and energy.

I didn't test extroot on the verasecure because I didn't have one to try it on. I think others on the forum did it and reported to work fine. There is nothing about the vera secure which makes it perform better than the plus. The extra core is unused... the vera UI is single threaded. It also does not use the CPU enough for the speed to make a difference. Same for the DRAM. The only benefit is the battery which to me would be more of a problem than benefit since they have limited lifetime and prevent me from easily power cycling the unit.

You must have missed my posts there... It has an extra CPU core indeed but the DRAM is unused by the software and the flash drive was catastrophically partitioned... netting less useable space than the Plus. After they got bought and my posts about the disastrous engineering they noodled around the partition with symlink (which I initiated with a script I provided on the forum too). I later moved on to boot the vera off of a USB SSD. I know about the zwave chip only because I dug into it. It makes no difference in functionality as the bridge mode the plus and edge had were not used by the vera. It makes the zwave firmware different though.

That was a long time ago. I think I published how to do this in the old forum but not sure if it's been deleted. At the moment, I no longer have any veras... Also the Vera secure runs on a different/cheaper chip than the vera plus I had.. Why don't you just let the vera run on the dongle?
