Reposting an article I got from a reddit thread.
I won't stop advocating against cloud dependence and unnecessary cloud reliance especially in the field of smarthomes.
I divested from a fairly large ubiquiti unifi system almost a year ago and I never connected my controller to their cloud service but as some may have sensed, it was a direction they were going towards. What got me off of it actually was the large disparity in product performance and a decreasing trust in the company with large amount of dubious advertising, inconsistent products for some of which the hardware could obviously not meet the marketing promises. -
Did you ever get a certificate on to your controller? Would love to get Let's Encrypt on but I wonder if they are making it difficult so people go for their cloud solution.

As I said, I got exasperated with my unifi system and got rid of it. The wifi products in particular were underwhelming and in spite of some pretty good switches and the pretty interface, overall it was just way too expensive and constraining for the performance it was delivering. The controller was starting to do a lot of things I didn't want it to do and became a hassle. Getting rid of the entire 12 unifi devices was the best thing I did for my network and my WAF since it doubled my wifi bandwidth, saved me a lot of money and freed a lot of my time.
