You caught me there. I was probably smarter then than I am now.

My entire system has been working so well that I stopped tinkering or upgrading it save for only occasional additions or optimization of a scene here or there on openLuup. I lost a lot by not practicing.

Well, it looks like I've made it to 5.39, although I'm surprised by the current update options ?

Being in the UK, and only ever using it on the EU frequency, any idea why it's giving me the option to switch to EU ? Where does it think I am set to at the moment ?

And now every z-wave backup I try fails..

You should be able to downgrade back... But yeah that's what I feared... Upgrading too far would make it impossible for the vera to restore...

Sadly there is no downgrade option available from v5.39 when I used the ‘all’ token, but I’m beginning to think that the Vera version numbering is related to the SDK

Using another UZB1 stick, and just moving from 5.26 & 5.27 both reported v4.61 on Vera (and both have the same SDK version - 6.71.01)

Observations so far…

UZB1 v5.06 [29304] SDK 6.??.?? = v4.01 on Vera
UZB1 v5.07 [29304] SDK 6.51.09 = v4.38 on Vera

UZB1 v5.26 [40196] SDK 6.71.01 = v4.61 on Vera
UZB1 v5.27 [40196] SDK 6.71.01 = v4.61 on Vera

UZB1 v5.32 [40196] SDK 6.81.00 = TBC on Vera
UZB1 v5.37 [40196] SDK 6.81.01 = TBC on Vera

UZB1 v5.39 [40196] SDK 6.82.01 = v6.09 on Vera

However the actual UZB firmware update options I have available via the zway controller are different - i only have 5.33 and 5.36 - any ideas ?

5.33 =5.32 and 5.36=5.37 if I remember correctly. They were just version numbered for Razberry vs UZB.

Would you believe it !

The target was to align with the standard v6.01 on the VeraSecure but the UZB1 v5.33 has ended us up on v6.02 !!!!

So it seems it’s not possible to get to v6.01 ??

Quick question, if i restore a z-wave backup onto a new controller - I will have two controllers both with the exact same z-wave devices and network registered

I’m curious what are the issues in running both controllers ?

Using the vera backup process you would have to go up or remain on the same version. If you backed up your vera which is on 6.01 into a stick in 6.02, you should be able to restore onto another vera with an SDK 6.02 and above. Have you tried that? Upgrading the vera?

To answer your question if you have both your controller with the same node ID, it will cause a mess to your network. In that case I would add the second controller so it takes a different node ID. (I ran vera and zway together this way for several months).
Here is the type of mess it will cause:
Controller1: turn the light one
Light: Ok the light is on
Controller2: Got it... euh What? who told you to?
Controller1: Are you on yet? Timeout, let me ask again. Retry!

This will cause the network to be very busy as nodes do not who to report back to or think they already reported and got an ack...

How can I upgrade the onboard zwave firmware on my VeraSecure, which is on v6.01?

Oh gosh... I need to remember this. I think at one point I found the firmware for the chip and using a serial updater, managed to manually upgrade the chip firmware through SSH. That was a long time ago. I think I published how to do this in the old forum but not sure if it's been deleted. At the moment, I no longer have any veras... Also the Vera secure runs on a different/cheaper chip than the vera plus I had.. Why don't you just let the vera run on the dongle?

I was looking to repurpose the UZB1 dongle and use it on something else like a raspberry pi.

Also what do you mean the Secure has a different cheaper (lesser quality ?) zwave chip compared to the plus ? Where can I look that up ?

Most of the specs I’d seen on the Verasecure had suggested that it was a performance bump compared to the plus, i.e dual cpu, more memory etc?

You must have missed my posts there... It has an extra CPU core indeed but the DRAM is unused by the software and the flash drive was catastrophically partitioned... netting less useable space than the Plus. After they got bought and my posts about the disastrous engineering they noodled around the partition with symlink (which I initiated with a script I provided on the forum too). I later moved on to boot the vera off of a USB SSD. I know about the zwave chip only because I dug into it. It makes no difference in functionality as the bridge mode the plus and edge had were not used by the vera. It makes the zwave firmware different though.

Sorry i missed that, but I do recall your exroot discussions a while back, as I’m still tempted to do that.

So in your opinion, given the choice of running your home on a VeraPlus or a VeraSecure*, which one would you choose ?

*The VeraSecure is a bricked one I picked up for next to nothing, and somehow managed to restore, so it’s basically a free swap.

(QQ : Is there a specific script for the VeraSecure, as I could only see Edge & Plus files listed on your github page - > https://github.com/rafale77/vera-extroot)
