Access control - allowing anonymous user to dashboard
tunnusT
Using build 25328 and having the following users.yaml configuration: users: # This section defines your valid users. admin: ******* groups: # This section defines your user groups. Optionally, it defines application # and API access restrictions (ACLs) for the group. Users may belong to # more than one group. Again, no required or special groups here. admin_group: users: - admin applications: true # special form allows access to ALL applications guests: users: "*" applications: - dashboard api_acls: # This ACL allows users in the "admin" group to access the API - url: "/api" group: admin_group allow: true log: true # This ACL allows anyone/thing to access the /api/v1/alive API endpoint - url: "/api/v1/alive" allow: true session: timeout: 7200 # (seconds) rolling: true # activity extends timeout when true # If log_acls is true, the selected ACL for every API access is logged. log_acls: true # If debug_acls is true, even more information about ACL selection is logged. debug_acls: true My goal is to allow anonymous user to dashboard, but MSR is still asking for a password when trying to access that. Nothing in the logs related to dashboard access. Probably an error in the configuration, but help needed to find that. Tried to put url: "/dashboard" under api_acls, but that was a long shot and didn't work.

VEC Virtual Switch Auto Off
S
I use Virtual Entity Controller virtual switches which I turn on via webhooks from other applications. Once a switch triggers and turns on, I can then activate associated rules. I would like each virtual switch to automatically turn off after a configurable time (e.g., 5 seconds, 10 seconds). Is there a better way to achieve this auto-off behavior instead of creating a separate rule for each switch that uses the 'Condition must be sustained for' option to turn it off? With a large number of these switches (and the associated turn-off rules), I'm checking to see if there is a simpler approach.If not, could this be a feature request to add an auto-off timer directly to the virtual switches. Upcoming Storage Change -- Got Back-ups?
toggledbitsT
TL;DR: Format of data in storage directory will soon change. Make sure you are backing up the contents of that directory in its entirety, and you preserve your backups for an extended period, particularly the backup you take right before upgrading to the build containing this change (date of that is still to be determined, but soon). The old data format will remain readable (so you'll be able to read your pre-change backups) for the foreseeable future. In support of a number of other changes in the works, I have found it necessary to change the storage format for Reactor objects in storage at the physical level. Until now, plain, standard JSON has been used to store the data (everything under the storage directory). This has served well, but has a few limitations, including no real support for native JavaScript objects like Date, Map, Set, and others. It also is unable to store data that contains "loops" — objects that reference themselves in some way. I'm not sure exactly when, but in the not-too-distant future I will publish a build using the new data format. It will automatically convert existing JSON data to the new format. For the moment, it will save data in both the new format and the old JSON format, preferring the former when loading data from storage. I have been running my own home with this new format for several months, and have no issues with data loss or corruption. A few other things to know: If you are not already backing up your storage directory, you should be. At a minimum, back this directory up every time you make big changes to your Rules, Reactions, etc. Your existing JSON-format backups will continue to be readable for the long-term (years). The code that loads data from these files looks for the new file format first (which will have a .dval suffix), and if not found, will happily read (and convert) a same-basenamed .json file (i.e. it looks for ruleid.dval first, and if it doesn't find it, it tries to load ruleid.json). I'll publish detailed instructions for restoring from old backups when the build is posted (it's easy). The new .dval files are not directly human-readable or editable as easily as the old .json files. A new utility will be provided in the tools directory to convert .dval data to .json format, which you can then read or edit if you find that necessary. However, that may not work for all future data, as my intent is to make more native JavaScript objects directly storable, and many of those objects cannot be stored in JSON. You may need to modify your backup tools/scripts to pick up the new files: if you explicitly name .json files (rather than just specifying the entire storage directory) in your backup configuration, you will need to add .dval files to get a complete, accurate backup. I don't think this will be an issue for any of you; I imagine that you're all just backing up the entire contents of storage regardless of format/name, that is the safest (and IMO most correct) way to go (if that's not what you're doing, consider changing your approach). The current code stores the data in both the .dval form and the .json form to hedge against any real-world problems I don't encounter in my own use. Some future build will drop this redundancy (i.e. save only to .dval form). However, the read code for the .json form will remain in any case. This applies only to persistent storage that Reactor creates and controls under the storage tree. All other JSON data files (e.g. device data for Controllers) are unaffected by this change and will remain in that form. YAML files are also unaffected by this change. This thread is open for any questions or concerns.

Possible feature request 2?
CatmanV2C
Just another thought. Adding devices from my Home Assistant / Zigbee2MQTT integration. Works perfectly but they always add as their IEEE address. Some of these devices have up to 10 entities associated, and the moment they are renamed to something sensible, each of those entities 'ceases to exist' in MSR. I like things tidy, and deleting each defunct entity needs 3 clicks. Any chance of a 'bulk delete' option? No biggy as I've pretty much finished my Z-wave migration and I don't expect to be adding more than 2 new Zigbee devices Cheers C

Reactor (Multi-System/Multi-Hub) Announcements
toggledbitsT
Build 21228 has been released. Docker images available from DockerHub as usual, and bare-metal packages here. Home Assistant up to version 2021.8.6 supported; the online version of the manual will now state the current supported versions; Fix an error in OWMWeatherController that could cause it to stop updating; Unify the approach to entity filtering on all hub interface classes (controllers); this works for device entities only; it may be extended to other entities later; Improve error detail in messages for EzloController during auth phase; Add isRuleSet() and isRuleEnabled() functions to expressions extensions; Implement set action for lock and passage capabilities (makes them more easily scriptable in some cases); Fix a place in the UI where 24-hour time was not being displayed.

With build 25328, if you copy a global reaction, a new reaction does not appear in the UI unless you do a refresh. I recall this used to work without needing this page refresh? Anyway, only a minor nuisance.

Difficulty defining repeating annual period
R
I have tried numerous ways to define a recurring annual period, for example from December 15 to January 15. No matter which method I try - after and before, between, after and/not after, Reactor reports "waiting for invalid date, invalid date. Some constructs also seem to cause Reactor to hang, timeout and restart. For example "before January 15 is evaluated as true, but reports "waiting for invalid date, invalid date". Does anyone have a tried and true method to define a recurring annual period? I think the "between" that I used successfully in the past may have broken with one of the updates.

Need help with sequence
T
Good evening all, For about the past week or so, I've been having problems with a specific rule in my home automation that controls when my home goes from an Away mode to Home mode. One of the conditions it checked for was my alarm panel, when it changed from Armed Away to Disarmed. There seems to have been a firmware update on the panel that added an intermittent step of "pending", and I can't say for certain it happens 100% of the time. Is there a way to write a condition that so it changes from one condition, to the next, and then another condition? As in, Home alarm changes from armed_away to pending to disarmed. Thanks.

Possible feature request?
CatmanV2C
No idea how easy this would be. During my migration away from Z-wave I've been replacing the Z-wave devices with Sonoff which has broken some of my automations. Any chance of a 'Test Reaction' function to call out which ones are broken because an entity no longer exists? Without actually running the reaction? Or does this exist already and I'm just not aware of how to do it? Obviously I can see entities that are no longer available, but not quite what I'm looking for. I guess it's something of an edge case so no huge issue. TIA! C

Reset a delay
CatmanV2C
I'm sure this has been asked, and answered, but damned if I can figure it out Use case: I have a rear garden with lights. A door from the kitchen into the garden and a door from the garage. Currently if I open the kitchen door the lights come on (yay) and a 3 minute delay starts. After 3 minutes, no matter what else happens, the lights go off (Boo! But also yay!) What I would like is for the 3 minute delay until the lights go off to start from the latest door open event. That is, if I'm going from kitchen to garage, and back again, the lights stay on until there's three minutes of no activity. I've tried 'hacking' with a virtual switch, but can't seem to stop the delay. Any pointers? TIA C

    This seems to happen if the shell command doesn't return any response on the first go

    Have you figured out what ps4-waker does when it doesn't get the device turned on? Does it return a particular exit code that isn't used by the on/off status result? Or does it just give an empty reply? Either way, you might write a wrapper script to detect that and retry (Reactor would then start the wrapper script instead of ps4-waker directly.

    Issues like this are how you bring your shell scripting and system administration skills up a notch.

    @toggledbits

    Actually I have five MSR rules for the Playstation. I have another one that is also monitoring for the Harmony Activity starting, this rule closes the lounge blind and curtains if its daytime.

    Would having two rules monitoring for the same trigger event, the Harmony Activity starting, have any affect on things?

    Maybe one rule hi-jacks the other from triggering sometimes ?

      I'm not sure, I will look out for when it happens again.

      I think it makes MSR error when it tries to send the "ps4-waker" command to turn ON the games console but fails to connect for whatever reason.

      Most times it works and the console does turn on but sometimes it doesn't.

      Thanks

      The goal I propose is to write a script that runs ps4-waker itself, and retries if it fails to connect. MSR would then run that script instead of running ps4-waker directly. If, for example, the ps4-waker script simply returns no data (empty) result, then something like this would work:

      #!/bin/sh

      while true; do
          # Run command and capture its output and exit status
          output=`ps4-waker $*`
          status=$?
          # If output was produced, stop looping.
          if [ -n "$output" ]; then
              break;
          fi
          sleep 1 # slow retries down a little
      done
      # Echo back the command output and exit with its exit status.
      echo "$output"
      exit $status

      Save this as ps4-wrapper.sh in the Reactor install directory (or somewhere along the path, like where ps4-waker currently is), and give it execute permissions (chmod 755 ps4-wrapper.sh).

      The wrapper script can be run in place of ps4-waker, with the same arguments (e.g. ps4-wrapper.sh status). If a request fails and produces no output, it is simply re-run until output is produced (or until the command times out in Reactor, when it is killed).

        No, each rule has its own supervision of its entities of interest, etc. You'd be able to quickly confirm this by looking in the logs and seeing that the SET reactions for both rules run.

          Great thanks I will try this approach instead then.

          But first I will leave things as is and see what happens? when it doesn't turn on the PS4 on first attempt.

          It might just return no data in the response as you suggest, or it may as I seem to think, return something else, which I haven't documented here in this thread yet. But I can't remember off the top of my head what it was doing.

            This isn't related to when the PS4 doesn't turn on.

            When the PS4 is OFF / sleep mode, I am seeing this error alert appearing, to do with the parsing of the output to JSON.

            588a1e0e-d7bc-42a6-9b14-51795fbcee8a-image.png

            I assume this alert occurs if the "ps4-waker check" command hasn't worked and initially pulled in the data ?

            Maybe I need two wrapper scripts then, one for turning on the power and one for the check command also.

              Regarding the power on issue and maybe using a wrapper script.

              When I manually run the "ps4-waker" command in terminal this is the output I get back:

               WAKEUP sent to device... 192.168.0.201

              I don't see any alert in MSR gui when it fails to turn on the PS4 on its first and currently only attempt to do so.

              Looking in the log I can't see anything there either as to why the command didn't turn on the PS4 ?

              I will try and implement the script now.

                @toggledbits

                I've created the ps4-wrapper.sh file and made it executable and placed it in to the Reactor root directory as I cannot find where the actual ps4-waker utility is installed / located on the system.

                When I try to run the script in terminal I get errors:

                root@HP-Thin01:/home/stuart/reactor# bash ps4-wrapper.sh
                ps4-wrapper.sh: line 15: syntax error: unexpected end of file
                root@HP-Thin01:/home/stuart/reactor# sh ps4-wrapper.sh
                ps4-wrapper.sh: 14: ps4-wrapper.sh: Syntax error: end of file unexpected (expecting "then")
                root@HP-Thin01:/home/stuart/reactor#

                Also how do I modify the MSR rules to run the script instead of the command directly ?

                I tried this:

                bee9c907-0aef-4f08-a79a-67bb97e4cc25-image.png

                Thanks

                EDIT:

                Seems it didn't like me creating the script in Notepad++ on Windows and copying it over to the Debian machine.

                So I deleted the script and created it again using nano editor on Debian and now I can run the script OK from the terminal window and the PS4 did turn ON.

                93abd9fb-f536-4768-81e2-d4da0826fb12-image.png

                However I cannot run the script from the MSR rule still, nothing seems to happen when I play the reaction.

                I can't see any errors related to ps4-wrapper.sh

                  When you create the file on Windows in Notepad++, it will get Windows line endings (CR+LF) instead of Unix line endings (LF alone) and that confuses the shell. You can select the right line endings under the Edit > EOL Conversion in Notepad++.

                  If you modified the ps4-waker command to be anything other than ps4-waker $* put it back the way I gave it to you. That lets you run the wrapper script with arguments on the command line that will get passed through, like this: ./ps4-wrapper.sh status or ./ps4-wrapper.sh somethingelse

                  In the MSR rule, you should use /full/path/to/ps4-wrapper.sh arguments

                      I haven't change the script, that line still says

                      output=`ps4-waker $*

                      In the terminal I can use this command and it works and outputs the response

                      sh ps4-wrapper.sh check

                      So the argument is passed OK.

                      I can also just run this command which turns on the PS4

                      sh ps4-wrapper.sh

                      There is no argument for the command for turning on the PS4 as the command is just

                      ps4-waker

                      So maybe this is the problem?

                      However I am unsure how to run the .sh file from my MSR rules?

                      Thanks

                        Best way is to use /full/path/to/ps4-wrapper.sh arguments, but you may also get away with ./ps4-wrapper.sh arguments if it's in the Reactor install directory. Remember to set the file permissions for read and execute.

                          Seems to do the trick, the PS4 now turns on when this rules trigger happens, which is the Harmony Activity Starting.

                          I will modify the other rules now to use the wrapper script instead of issuing the commands directly.

                          Thanks again.

                            Excellent. If you've got a backup script running that takes care of just your config and storage, remember to add your wrapper script to its list of things to copy, since it's not in one of those directories.

                              I haven't got one, but I could really do with having a backup script running to copy those folders off the HP Thin Client to maybe my Windows file server or something. Or maybe even to a USB stick in the Thin Client if I can find a spare one big enough.

                                  Those directories don't get very large, so a network copy is fine and will go fast. I distrust USB sticks, especially when left in devices, as they often have poor thermal management (not built to be left inserted full time) and degrade quickly like that, with little or no warning. Your backup media should be as reliable as possible.

                                  Ezlo error is benign. I'll quiet it down.

                                    I've just checked:

                                    Storage = 1.08MB

                                    Config = 20.4KB

                                    So yeah pretty small.

                                    I will have to do some Googling how to create a script and schedule it to run, to copy the folders and files to my Windows server, as I have no idea how to do it under Debian terminal.

                                    There is no desktop on that HP Thin Client running MSR.

                                    in fact an inbuilt backup feature in MSR would be nice to have.

                                      I'll think about it, but my thoughts on it so far aren't leaning towards it.

                                      It would have to be cross-platform (Windows, any flavor of Linux you can imagine including Macs, etc.), and to be at all effective, be able to store the backup somewhere other than the place it's backing up... a separate local volume? Windows server? NAS? An NFS share on a Linux server? SCP? FTP? RSYNC? HTTP PUT/POST?... so many options. Reliable backup depends on the local environment quite heavily, and your local knowledge of it and the risks you identify. Unlike Vera, this isn't a contained problem for a canned solution on proprietary hardware and software supported by a controlled cloud. And then, of course, people are going to want a one-click restore, and maybe even partial restore.

                                      Maybe someday there will be backup, but for the moment, it's not a priority and anything I do is all but guaranteed to be a large effort that yields an inadequate result.

                                        Yes I understand what you are saying and there could be many different ways to skin that cat.

                                        But how about a more universal option? Most people will have a Google Drive or Microsoft One Drive cloud storage with their user accounts.

                                        Could a backup option be added to upload to those types of cloud storage services?

                                          Everything appears to all be working nicely now.

                                          The only issue is sometimes I see this error alert

                                          c0eaae29-9778-441e-9430-f6a61a5dfe4a-image.png

                                          I assume it happens when the "ps4wakercheck" variable hasn't been populated with any data and therefore the "ps4wakerparse" variable has nothing to parse.

                                          The ps4waker check rule is now using the wrapper script also, so if for whatever reason it didn't get data returned on its first attempt, it does on the second or subsequent attempts.
